Seeking a Bass /w a Strong Low-End

I am in the market for a quality five-string Bass that has a strong low-end (maybe low-mids for clarity issues) and can handle the heavy stuff (cut through the mix, cause ears to burst open, etc).

To be more specific, I want something that will knock the air out of people when they stand in front of my amp. Something angry and mean.


I am open to all types of woods, pickups, neck-types, and the like, and I would prefer that the Bass cost less than $1k.

EDIT: For clarification, I want (not need) to buy a new Bass. Saying to check my amp is pointless because I don't need a new setup as of now, I just want a new Bass (sorry if I made this thread seem more urgent than I intended). I just want suggestions on a Bass that is nice and punchy and will "cut through" the mix so much that my Guitarist will cry (I am speaking figuratively here).​

stingray is powerful as hell,but heavy and thick neck..
Pbass is always a good bet,sure..but I say go active,

all the active musicman stuff is monsterously heavy,
or if u can afford it, SADOWSKY is the ultimate "secret weapon"...;)
once u get the Sadowsky sound,you'll want that preamp all the time.

a good setup, and alot of speakers are more important,
a 4x10,two 4x10's..
or a 4x10+ 15 is best..

Played a few stingrays had no neck dive :confused:

Maybe cause I was using a thick leather strap? -shrug-

I agree about the Sadowsky sound but honestly, my Stingrays (in his price range) sound almost as good as good as my Sadowskys (not in his price range) by running them through the Sadowsky Pre Amp/DI. Also, a good strap will help make the extra 2 or so pounds that a Stingway weighs over a Sadosky seem negligable.

Well worth checking out and worth the $200-250 it costs IMO....

I'll third (or fourth) the EBMM SR5. My SR5 was my main bass for 3 years or so, so now everything just feels super light and my SR5 feels normal. I wouldn't pick heavy to describe it... more like substantial. And when you're making the thunderous bottom end, it would feel wrong not to have some heft in the bass.

I second the Sadowsky also, but no way of finding one in your price range (unless it's been through a trash compactor or something). My M5-24 gets all the agressive grindy mids of my Ray, but has a lot more overall clarity. I'm also starting to prefer the 19mm string spacing.

Also, check out the Lakland 55-02.
