Tease :D

What stage is your build at - must be about 7/8 months in now. What's left to do...

Not that far...hence the lack of pictures. But he is making good progress and was talking about having the bass ready to go to the finishers in a few weeks time! :hyper: :hyper:

It has been nearly 7 months since I placed the order and I have to admit there has hardly been a day where I have not thought about it. :rollno: :rollno:

Mark, has yours come back from the finishers yet?

Welcome to the Sei club. We are all looking forward to seeing some pictures and hearing about the specs of both your finished SEIs and the pair that Martin is currently making for you.

You will have 4 SEI basses then...:hyper: :hyper:

Well I'm a little nearer to losing my (w). Alex confirmed today that my bass is back from the finishers.

I've got to call back on Monday to get an ETA. These are exciting times, guys, exciting times indeed. Nearly the culmination of over 10 years of 'Sei lust' ....

I've been following the threads here and on 7s build re the customer service aspect with interest.

I'm far more relaxed with this fretless build than with the fretted. But I've always adopted the attitude of "It'll be ready when it's ready". The lack of photos can be frustrating but I always knew of Martin's reluctance. I was expecting that - but I can be bribed to go and take some of any new builds :)

Whenever something needed to be talked about - I got a phone call. Like the facings and the fingerboard line ideas for the fretless. 2 days of phone calls/emails back and forth. If I don't hear then things are progressing. I will be hearing back on the facing stuff shortly.

When I placed the orders I took Matthews and Rusty's advice which I wholeheartedly agree with now. It's a 2 way process. I went to Martin knowing his work, then worked WITH Martin to accomplish my dream bass. I bounced my ideas around, some worked and Martin was sure others wouldn't. But between us we came up with what was right for me - compromise on both sides.

We are currently discussing the line markers. He isn't sure it'll work - I think it will. But what is obvious is that he is open to the idea and is thinking about maybe a slight adaptation. I'll be popping up there to sort it out when the time is right. It's not a biggie.

Only by trusting your luthier (any luthier) can this be done. If you go in with a "This is what I want and thats all there is to it" attitude - then it won't work out. I'm not looking for trouble or criticising but could this have been DragonLords trouble? (Just airing my thoughts - mean no harm DragonLord)

Anyhow - With all this talk about Martin's business model. How about a SOC members discount? All in favour say Aye.

No prob mate! Actually, I could say that in a way it was the opposite. I was ready to give up on things that I wanted. Anyway, I've talked about this with a couple guys and I (and they) don't think I'm just being anal. I think I will do that thread one day, maybe not soon, but whenever I do it will be just facts and no bashing.

Again, they do a good job and, if you give them every spec down to the last detail, I believe that they will pull it off nicely... although others could probably do it at the same quality for less money. Still love the Flamboyant shape, but I can't see me buying a Sei anytime soon at this point. To make it clear, it's not a horror story like "they ripped me off" or something, it's just that I wasn't satisfied with some of the things the came up - especially at this price point. You'll know what I mean when the time comes, no big deal.

Yeah Paddy, it's definately a 2 way process..

When I had my original spec, I went after all the bells and whistles !! Whilst my spec was pretty darn near, after discussing things wiith Martin it was apparent that the fanned frets weren't necessary for me, the lacewood just screamed out for a gloss finish and I didn't need expensive Claro walnut for the core.

Without Martins logical and sensible approach I would definately have ended up with a bass which i wouldn't have been happy with. However, some of the money I saved by not having the fancy walnut, dye finish and the fanning was spent on LED's. Ok they're not strictly necessary either but you get my drift...

Another note though, does anybody on here own the blue flamboyant on the Sei site. Go to pictures, then flamboyant. It's only one on the next page after Paddy's madrona baby with the bass clef inlay.....

News on the fretless!

Martin has found some nice Birdsye Maple for the facings. When I get back from skiing I'll be popping up to take a look.

Also be nice to get a look at some of the projects here that are being built.

So signing off for a week - take care all. See you all after skiing
