OK all you fellow Sei Club members, here's my 2 Sei Jazz 5's ..

The wineburst is for sale at the mo' with a new Jazz 5 on it's way, with a 70's vibe.
Vintage white with tort guard and matching headstock and including a "brazilian" RW neck and MOP block inlays.

Shouldn't be long now.

Well, the waiting goes on for my Sei.

I have not one, but two lots of train tickets ready for the trip "daaan sssaaarrrrfff". A relative of ours has offered to swap dates during March so we can travel and collect the bass.

Meanwhile, I'm keeping busy and trying to keep my mind off the subject. Tonight was a trip to the Glasgow Dog Training School with 2 of our 3 dogs. Luna, the Rotty pup and Satay (as in chicken) our collie cross...

Tomorrow will be some more Open University work and some more getting to grips with the newly-acquired double bass...

How on earth did you guys manage over the final few weeks !!

Er, I just frikkin' ordered my Sei!

Yes, after many years of drooling over these basses I've taken the plunge - and I'm getting one of these:

Essentially the same type of bass but my specs are:

34" Scale
Ebony Board
26 Frets
Maple neck with Mahogany stringers
Ash body
Buckeye Burl top wood - front and back
Demeter circuit
Nordstrand pups
Ramp
Piezo Bridge (Ghost system)
Red LEDs on side of neck
Black Hardware
Active/passive capability
Satin finish...

I'm open to thoughts re; the pups and wood combos - I'm looking for a hybrid 'jazz' tone in the main but I'm sure I'll be able to conjure all sorts from this baby in the end.

Anyway - I'm still in a slight daze, this is going to be a great bass!

And after my last agonising custom build (my fretless took well over a year!!!) I think the 10 months will fly by - I'll keep you posted obviously.

Welcome and well done on placing the order...I always liked the look of that bass! Is this your first SEI or just another one for you?

My best advice to you regarding woods and pickups is to listen very closely to what Martin says. He really knows his stuff and certainly a whole lot more than I could add!

I would also love to hear about your custom fretless. I have played a fretless SEI for over 12 years now (picture link on my posting on page 9 of this thread) and have a new fretless SEI on order (details on my posting on page 10 of this thread).

Hi Ben - thanks mate - but I must clarify what I meant about my fretless - it is NOT a Sei - it was made by a lovely guy in Brighton (Jeff Chapman) who is a great maker but just way toooooooo slow!

This is my first Sei - I have played many different models - all of them in fact - over the years in the shop and I really am happy with my choice - I'm lucky as I live in London so I'll be able to drop by once a month or so.

I've been reading all the different bits of feedback on everyone's differing experiences with ordering a custom bass. All I can say is that it is different for everyone - and more importantly - for every ten or twenty oir 100 happy customers there will always be one that it doesn't work out for - and I think that goes for a lot of luthiers - I shan't name names but I've heard all sorts of stuff about custom makers (that I will never repeat) and I think it really boils down to a combination of factors that either make your choice of maker work or not work for you. I've known Martin and Alex for several years - I know their methods and specifically Martin (and John's) work and I think they make exceptional basses - I would not have chosen them otherwise.

It'll be a while before I have pics but I am thinking of a 'yellow-ish' buckeye top - just so you have a clue on that - a new batch is due in some time in April so I'll hopefully have some idea on that then.

Welcome to this thread. Your specs sound rather tasty and in particular the yellowish Buckeye. That is exactly what I have on my fretless Sei and it is lovely looking peice of wood. The good thing about Buckeye is that is will not impart a tone to your bass so the body and neck/fingerboard woods will be the tone shapers.


I have no experience with either the Demeter or the Norstrands but from their reputation they will do the job.

Anyway we will no doubt hear a lot from you over the coming months as we share your agony.

Well I'm back.

Complete with broken scaphoid in my left wrist. Yep - broken wrist. no bass for 6-8 weeks and maybe an op to insert a pin.

Drummer impressed at cancelling gigs...

Fell down a red run. Silly boy! :help:

Hey Dave

Yeah I'm sticking with B - G - I've really toyed with the idea of going E-C but my boys Laurence Cottle and Gary Willis - and my new fave Hadrien Feraud - all play B - G and as I slap a bit I dig a G string and I love low Ds and Cs - so there you go. I'm also staying with 34" - I just don't get on with 35" - I know the tone can be fatter but my hand are quite small and I know the tones I already get from 34 and they sound fine to my ears - thought the Sei's tone will definitely be richer and fatter than what I already get - this is going to be a rocking bass for funk and jazz!

Hey Paddy - sorry to hear about your wrist mate - take it easy and work your way slowly back up to speed when it gets better.

yeah ive been toying with the E-C idea as well but i dont think id do it unless it was a garrison that was 33" and this is gonna be a rocking bass, really sounds like its gonna be great.

and are you gonna go for the Nordstrand Fatstacks or the Dual coils?

Yes! Having just read Kevin Lindsey's review of the very bass I added (the pic above) - it sounds like they are the way to go - the sound he describes is exactly what I'm looking for - but the ebony board I've chosen will give my bass unbelievable punch...I think it's all shaping up nicely.

Thanks for the comments on the wrist guys :crying:

It's not actually a problem. I'm going to take the time to really focus in and tighten up on my right hand technique (3 finger and double thumbin'). Also want to get some more theory under my belt.

Been meaning to do that for a while now but time wouldn't allow so every cloud and all that... It's all good.
