Likewise, it has been my observation that jugs tend to get crowds going. Wash boards, not so much.

It always amazes me that, out of the many thousands of hit songs out there through the years, bands seem to opt for the two extremes of either:
- playing the same 45 tired songs that every band had been playing since 1979 or,
- playing songs that nobody has ever heard.
Tell your singer that there are many well-known tunes that aren't on the list of 45 overdone songs, and that the band will have better success if you attempt to draw from that pool of tunes rather than doing obscure B sides.
If that doesn't work, either fire the singer, get someone else to pick tunes, or poach the other players and start your own band.
It's pretty simple. But I would LOVE for you to start a "How to get people dancing without a drummer" thread.
Similar experience here. We had a couple of female vocalists who were trying to bring some newer songs into the rotation and people generally enjoyed them, but nothing hit as hard as Gary Moore and ZZ Top hahaSomething I was told by an experienced muso many years ago has always run true for me at gigs.
"People don't know what they like. They like what they know."
Like most others on this forum, I'd love to do cool unknown tunes and have the crowd go wild each time. But it usually doesn't happen.
So we crank up "Uptown Funk," and it does.
I will give two good examples
There is bloodletting by concert blonde which was a big band but had the best success in Australia (we in the US)
The way you make me feel by MJ
MJ is huge but majority of people know Billie jean and thriller and one other. Never the way you make me feel.
There are good songs but never like the radio hits or the singles
Not even close. But there's and unwritten agreement between the band and the audience. If the audience KNOWS it is attending the show of an originals band, you're good to go. Play (literally) whatever the heck you want. But if they're just going to a bar to hear a cover band play, you had better play at least 75% hits. Indulge yourself a couple of songs per set. Other than that, familiarity will win the day.
Oh right. When they said 'Play what everyone knows', they didn't mean 'Play what everyone knows'. They meant 'Play what you want'. Thank you for clearing that up for me. I thought they meant 'Play what everyone knows'. I don't know how I thought that. Silly me. I will know better from now on. 'Play what everyone knows' doesn't mean 'Play what everyone knows'. Gottit. That's not what anybody in this thread is saying. Context matters.
Funny, I sort of had the same problem with our lead singer. That is, if he had his way most of our songs would be a bunch of weird/obscure stuff. Fortunately, I started the band, own all the PA gear, book all the gigs, and the list continues, so have a voice in what we play. If you do not have that sort of leverage then try and figure out if the other band members feel the same as you, if so then it would be time to chat with the singer. If not, then it might be time to find another band.Playing with a lot of good musicians. Everyone is very talented and been playing for a while. However, the singer is picking the songs and most fall flat to the crowd. I understand not wanting to play the same as everyone else but you have to play songs that the crowd will know. I have tried hinting at it with no avail. How do I tell her these songs suck wile keeping my spot in the band.
This is why I always discuss how songs are picked before I join a band.Playing with a lot of good musicians. Everyone is very talented and been playing for a while. Will give it a shot…"People don't know what they like. They like what they know."

I'd probably open the discussion with, "Do you guys like not getting crowd response when we play? Is the effect you're trying to get is for people to appear bored?"Playing with a lot of good musicians. Everyone is very talented and been playing for a while.
