Ric5, I've always loved this bass.
I have an 8 string myself, and pretty much all of the factory ones shade the pickups towards the bridge which I think is silly. 8's have STRINGS giving all kinds of high end information--what they lack is the gut-busting lows from a solo'd neck pickup, with the added ability to dial up mids/highs from a bridge unit. Yours has a true NECK pickup--much respect. I know in my heart that I would love the way it sounds.
And it has the only perfect fix for neck dive--an extended strap button. I tried all the other suggestions from internet "experts" and they aren't worth a pooh. Wide leather strap--are you kidding me??? I like slippery straps so I can move my instrument around quick and easy, instead of dragging my expensive shirt towards the floor on the left side. Adding weight to body or strap? Needed over 2 lbs of lead to balance my Iceman, while a strap button extension added only a few ounces.

Your builds are among the few I save photos of, as they nail the details that are truly important.

the 8 string sg bass I sorta did as a lark … I never really bonded with octave string basses … but this one went together quickly and came out a lot better than expected. The 30" scale makes it little like a baritone guitar … it is like a cross between a guitar and a bass. The only down side is when I play it with a band it does not fill in the low end as well as my 34" scale 5 string basses do. Even with the neck pickup. But it has unbelievable harmonics.

I will raise your 1970 EB3L (which is beautiful btw) with a 1969 EB3 containing a first run 1972 Dimarzio Model 1(first year produced).

Super nice bass you have there, I've only had mine for a year or so. She was a mess when I bought her but she's coming back to life again.1 trip to my guitar tech now and she will be pretty close. I'm just going to have him do a better set up and go over the wiring to make sure everything is fine.what a Great Thump they have

Thank you for the kind words. This one is currently under restoration. Quite by accident I stumbled across a 1969 Neck pickup and it has gone in for refretting. I have only heard it with the Dimarzio installed and it needs some reattachment. This poor beast has spent the last 45 years in a attic in Pennsylvania. I was amazed that I got any sound out of it at all.

Just returned from the Luthier and the 1969 Gibson EB3 is currently under restoration. Complete fret replacement, fretboard conditioning and leveling, and pickup replacement from a 1972 Dimarzio model 1 back to a '69 Gibson Mudbucker. I don't have any pics yet but they will be forthcoming.
Whew that was a process. I haven't been questioned like that since I got my first top secret clearance.
As soon as they arrive will post them.
