Really? Even though the previous discussion was about two ND3-J4 bridge pickups and not Sidewinders? I would have expected a bit wider aperture with the two SW4-J4 pickups touching.

I didn't see that you said sidewinders... The narrow pickups are made to fit into a Jazz cover, so the distance would be the same as the width of a Jazz pickup, since they are centered in the cover. The SW4-Js fill the entire Jazz cover, and two will fit into a 35 shell.

What are the actual dimensions of a single SW4-J4 bridge pickup without the cover?
Finished installing my SDG's Deep / Narrow Sidewinders in my Schecter Stiletto 4, they sound killer. 100 times better than the stock HZ's
Ran it completely passive, with a Vol, Tone and Blend Pot then 2 Series / Parallel Switch's.
I have to replace the tone pot since I didnt realize it was an audio taper. I also have to switch around the wiring on my blend pot since it runs backwards.
But overall completely satisfied with the pickups. Tons of great sounds.

I just read on sgdlutherie.com that you are redesigning your Jazz Sidewinders.Any details that you can share with us?
I'm trying to get the output up a little, and I wasn't totally happy with certain aspects of the tone, compared to the larger Sidewinders. So I'm redesigning the bobbins.
When I do the narrow sidewinders in the larger cases I have a little more room to work with. Because of the cramped space in the Jazz covers I had to move up to 44AWG wire, and didn't like the results. I had been using a set in one of my basses, and I actually like the Neo Jazzbuckers better. So that told me I needed to make some changes. I'm probably just being fussy. I'll have them back soon. I make tweaks to all the pickups from time to time.
Thanks for the explanation. I doubt you're being fussy...sounds like refinement to me.

I have a tone in my head I shoot for when designing the pickups. Sometimes I end up with a different tone, which isn't a bad thing. So what I'm doing with the Jazz sidewinders is making the bobbins wider so I can fit more wire on them without resorting to very thin wire. The thin wire bumps up the mids too much and lacks some low end I'm looking for, especially out of the bridge pickup.

I have one here to use as a model, and I had hoped to have made a mold to cast them in by now, but haven't gotten around to that yet. But it is on my to-do list.
Will this, theoretically, give them a flatter overall response without lowering the resonant frequency?

Count me among those interested and fascinated to see what comes of this! I've been quite interested in the sounds you've gotten out of both the jazzbuckers and the J sidewinders. I've been delayed in ordering a set by economic necessity, though money is getting saved away. I can't wait to hear what the new tweaked jazzwinders can do.
So I've had my SGD ND3's for a couple months now and they are easily the tastiest pickups I have heard.
I've been trying to get a "wal" tone, and indeed that's what originally drew me to SGD; David was making a wal clone. While I probably will still try the wal clone when it comes out, what I have now might just sound better than a wal (impossible to say unless I personally had a wal to play through my rig). So I'm running the ND3s through an ACG preamp and couldn't be happier with what I hear. They far outstrip both the carvin soapbars and the carvin jazz pickups.
While the "wal tone" was my goal, I play in a cover band and spend most of my time with the front pickup on solo and it's the tastiest neck/"P" tone I've heard.
I should have some proper mic'd clips in a couple weeks at most.

Glad you like the pickups! I often favor the front pickup, which is something I never used to do with other pickups I used.

OK, so because I had to solve a problem with a humbucker size Sidewinder I was working on for an order, I came up with a new way to use neos in the Sidewinders, and the first tests sound great, if I do say so myself, so I'm going to take this same approach to the other Sidewinders and have neos in them soon.
I haven't decided yet if they are going to be a new line, or if I'm going to replace the existing line which uses ceramic magnets.
So stay tuned.
