Shavo Odadjian banned Ashdown ad

This, of course would have been a perfectly measured, open-minded, normal reaction, unlike the reaction of those oversensitive, closed minded American Christians.

If I had a bed of amps, it would be made of a bunch of my good ol' Fender TV 350watt.

I wasn't sure the exact circumstances of it, but I had heard due to a wave of complaints, advertisers finally banned the image. I can see Ashdown wanting to avoid controversy, but pulling an ad like that only perpetuates the idea that it's okay to censor EVERYTHING. I'm against censorship to begin with and I'm definitely not a Christian, so I don't think it should be banned, but there's always someone to complain.

It's a free country.

That said, there are many things that freedom allows you to do that you just shouldn't do. You can tread all over someone's beliefs, and the ideas that they hold dear if you want to, as long as you don’t physically or financially harm them. You could dress in Nazi attire and march in Jewish neighborhoods, as some people do. You can depict the crucifixion of Jesus in an amp ad or float a Crucifix in a jar of urine if you really want to. Some have. Bear in mind that in doing so there could be some consequences, hurt feelings, and you could emerge from the exercise being an a**hole for doing it - even though it was fully within your rights to do so.

People with a shred of common sense would weigh the advantages of posting a "shock value" ad that is bound to offend with the disadvantages of alienating a lot of people and come up with the right thing to do.

Ashdown probably got smart a little late in the game and realized that Christian churches, especially evangelical and Pentecostal Christian churches purchase a lot of musical gear, and with this ad in the media not much of it was going to be Ashdown.

There are enough things to kick around in this world. People should leave religion alone. Enough people have been killed thorugh the ages over religions of all types, so why stir something up?

I guess it was a choice to either mock Jesus or play vampire or ghoul or something equally goth.

Do you REALLY think for a second that this ad is referring to / depicting ANY crucifiction victim other than Jesus?

Sure, many people have been crucified, but how many can you name?

FWIW - I'm neither evangelical or pentacostal. But just because I'm not doesn't mean it's morally ok for me to mock their religion or use their symbols in a manner offensive to them any more that it would be for me to do so to any other religion. I could, it's a free country, but I'm not a**hole enough to do it.

St. Peter, St. Andrew, Bishop Simeon of Jerusalem, All 6000 of Spartacus' slave army, Persian General Artyactes etc. Alexander the Great crucified Callisthenes and about 2000 Tyrenians.

It was a pretty common method of execution in ancient times. I think it's pretty safe to say that most of us have an ancestor who was dispatched this way...therefore the point is valid.

Just sayin'. No need to get in a twist over it.

I'd say you can name more than the next guy. I doubt many would know if their grandmother had been crucified unless they witnessed it. I'm not in a twist, I just think kicking the beliefs some people hold sacred for shock value or other reasons is unnecessary and amounts to ****head type behavior, and everyone has a right to be a ***head. Doesn't mean you should.

As I mentioned earlier, let him pose on the amps as Mohammad or pose jamming away in the gas chambers at Auswitz and see what kind of reaction he gets. He might not live to regret it (or his career might not survive.)

Why kick anyone's religion around? Give me a good reason, just one.

I don't get why everyone thinks this is a cool ad. I'm not christian, and take no offense to it, but it's pretty tacky. I saw it described as 'cutting edge'. Yeah, cause the whole 'depict myself as being on the cross' hasn't been done before. Actually I do take offense, it is that it is arrogant and, as already said, tacky.

Americans can be very oversensitive and our primarily Christian population isn't the most open-minded. I don't see anything in the ad to be offended by, it's just a picture. I highly doubt Shavo lost his audience in America, Europe, or anywhere else with this picture. If something about System was going to scare off their audience, a meaningless picture would be the last thing to do it.

This Christian American wouldn't have objected to the ad pic. I think banning the ad in the USA is an act of poor judgment and uncalled-for censorship on whoever made that decision.

Yes, yes very funny, let's make yet another remark about 'if it were the prophet Mohammed it would have been banned'. You're right, it would have because people take serious offense to that. Okay, maybe a couple of you who are Christians don't take offense to this, but there must have been some in order to get the ad taken out. It wasn't banned, if you read the other posts you'll see it was removed by Ashdown after they got complaints. That's a good enough reason to pull the ad.

It's a weak idea, looks poorly done too. Good, clever, 'cutting edge' advertising doesn't have to and should not give in to such tired, tacky, rude things as religious mockery. This is neither good, clever or 'cutting edge'. It just looks like an idea from someone who never grew up.
