My preference was for the Stenback - to me it was crisper and cut through mix nicely. Next up would be Sadowsky. Question - what does your signal chain look like for recording?

No joke… when you’re ready to sell the Stenback, DM me first. That is THE tone! 
To answer some questions:
Signal chain, every bass gained properly in the quad cortex.
Neve1073-->opto comp.(captures)
No eq, almost no compression.
The fodera's pre is in the cavity and set to my liking.
The sad I added a bit low end, no treble.
I could have processed every bass to fit this track better, but I just wanted it as 'honest' as possible.
To me they are equally good, every bass has its specialty.
You can still order 3 of these bass at the builders, not the Stenback, he stopped building.
I will never sell it.
But ist not better then the other 3, just the only 5 string that is like my '66 Jazzbass.
And indeed, the fodera is closest to the original bass, the stingray.

For me, next to the sound, the feel of a bass is just as important. The way it vibrates and responds to plucking a note for example. That's what got me from the first note (a low F, I think it was) I played on my Stenback in the store I bought it from.
So may I ask how these basses differ in feel to the player?

fyi- Tom is still building. I got a DM reply from him just last month when I inquired about a build. I’m still on the list. Someday…
Valid point, good question.
Stenback has that jazzbass feel, dry quick response, very dynamic. De Gier is very controlled and even, a bit compressed. Great for slap also. Both play light. The Fodera, 35’ is tighter, piano like tone, no slapper. But great for soloing, chords and big notes. The Sad, I feel at home, this is nr 14 I ever bought. Plays light, nice to dig in.
The De Gier is the most comfortable one I think.
Strange, I talked to Paul Sips who ensured me, he stopped. And when Tom says he stops, he stops.

the last built was sold 2 weeks ago at bassmatters.
Why 14 Sadowskys? Were they all different? Do you have any basses for a long time?
It seems it doesn’t matter much what brand you play. You’d make a $300 bass sound good.
June 10th was when he sent that message. I also spoke with Morten at Bass Buddha. (He was trying to sell me one of Scott Devine’s Stenback p-basses). He said Tom has been cutting back on building basses. But no indication that he’s stopping completely. He did say that the wait would probably be longer (I’ve been on the list for 4 years).

Very interesting comparison! As others have noted, the playing is first class and the signal chain sounded very good. I voted for the Sadowsky. Although I've never owned one, every time I hear someone playing one at various venues in Nashville, the Sadowsky basses all sound absolutely superb. That Sadowsky is a beautiful bass! I know that Fodera has some fans out there and their instruments are well made, but all I can say is that I'm not feeling the vibe. I've visited them at several NAMM shows and my "on" button has remained "off". Although I'm not familiar with some of these basses, all of them appeared to be very nice and well made.
Gotta ask - on that Sadowsky and on the Stanbeck, are the pickups single-coil, or hum-cancelling?
I own Sadowsky‘s and prefer them 99% of the time but on this track I went with the Stenback.
