OK-----not enough spare money for a Birdsong or Landing, definitely not enough spare money for an Alembic, but not interested in a real cheapo either-------soooooooooo....what can give some quality and solid bass sound and playability so that I will not cry over not having an Alembic or Landing?

Squire has just put out some JAG shorties that look nice. Cheap too. But yeah, the MIJ Mustang is probably what you are looking for.

Also Warmoth has shortscale Js that can be really nice as well.

FWIW my shortscale Stambaugh cost close to $2000 but it is totally worth it.

I don't know what you are planing to spend but the Jerry Jones Longhorn is a really really nice short scale, with a unique but great sound.

I now love my Waterstone Indra (it had to grow on me), but I'm nearly ecstatic about the Warmoth 32in fretless jazz I put together. I'd imagine the 30 is everything this is, just shorter. If you don't mind selecting everything that you'd like to have and screwing it together I think this is the best short scale option in the range you're (not) talking about!
