I'd echo this. I got a pair and putting the neck one in a Ric/Sheehan position gives exactly that deep, woolly but still a bit articulate sound.
On my test bass which also happens to be 32" scale I absolutely love it. Better than the bridge/middle position (I put them in the 4003 positions).
Not sure if it's just how I had my amp set, but it nailed geezer's tone on "lord of this world" off master of reality. Mid present, full, and woolly. Just the neck pickup at least.

I have this board that was 10' long, it's not thick enough to bookmatch, so I had to do some non-efficient cuts to get two pieces that match. In a board with ambrosia there can be a lot of color variation in the wood. I got two pieces I'm pretty happy with. I'll get these glued up and start carving tomorrow morning. Of course there is more figuring here than you can see in the picture.
Hmm, the price is certainly right, they're chrome and I like what you're describing with the sound, but I'm having a problem with how big and blocky they look. I'll think about it, but I was seriously considering the Alumnitone J pickups, I think these would look really slick and I do like how they sound (although the ones I've installed are the bigger ones, not the J versions).
I do think the wider Bassbars would probably look better than skinny AlumaJs, but it's tough to say before you have the body cut out to get a proper perspective.
Or you could go with a Bassbar at the neck and an AlumaJ at the bridge, a la Gibson EB-3... or something.
Also, I've heard of people using Lace's guitar Humbucker and Deathbucker for bass as well, with good results. The Deathbucker being hotter and more aggressive sounding.
I have one of the lace pickups to try but haven't been able to get past the spartan/techno look yet or found any style body it would suit. Maybe someday but until then it sits in the cupboard.
I just ordered a set of the J Alumintone pickups. I think they look sort of 50's retro, they have a 15% sale going on at Lace.
Looks like a Rickenguilder! Still don't like the pickup look.
Lol I was just thinking about this, but more-so because they were also using Lace Alumatone pickups. From what I remember of the few soundclips I heard, it sounded great and actually quite "vintage inspired".
I love everything about that bass, except for Hammersmith's complete inability to actually get them made and delivered.

I was |-| this close to buying in on that initial offering, but opted against at the last minute. In hindsight that was a good decision.
Back on topic, I think those Lace pickups have a really cool look to them. Can't wait to see how this build comes together.
Yeah...Loved the look (and sound) of the Lace pickups myself....
Got a refund no probs but I'd MUCH rather have had the bass....
....Who knows?....One of these days I could have enough in my GAS fund to get somebody to build me one!...

That Hammersmith looks awesome. Hadn’t heard about the production difficulties. Is there a spec sheet anywhere? Wondering about woods, neck joint, scale length, etc - might just want to build me (and Freddy) one one of these winters....
