Short scale with Flats

I love how short scale basses sound and play.
Actually in my bass stable I have 2 shortscale. One is a Danelectro Longhorn and the other is a unusual Ibanez Artstar AB200, hollow body.

Both are actually equipped with rounds. Since I love also Flats and I would love to try my shortscale basses with flats I would appreciate to have more informations about your short scale basses and about which flats you string them.

I have Chromes on my short scale (and Fender flats on my Jazz 24 long scale). I understand that Scott Beckwith at Birdsong (who built my shortscale) plans to put nylon tapewounds on the second in the series, so that might also be worth exploring. The flats were a solution to the problem I was having with round tone in the group I play with. The sustain on the treble frequencies that came out when using rounds clashed horribly with the music/instrumentation we were using.

Scott had to clip the Chromes fairly short before stringing, so you may want do likewise. I can give you exactly how much was clipped, but it's a 4+4 angled headstock on a 31.5" scale length bass (near-med. scale), so I doubt it would do you any good.

My short scale bass came with Chromes, and I really like them. They feel tighter than the Thomastik-Infeld flats I have on my P-bass, and the sound is very even and balanced. Yet, I've just bought a set of Thomastik-Infeld Jazz Rounds that I'm eager to try. But if I find that I don't like the them, I'd be happy to put the Chromes back on.
