I got a Fender Dimension V active H before I got a Stingray.
Why?
The Fender has the wider spacing I prefer, and this particular model is certainly a salute to the Stingray--the pickup is in the same spot, wired in parallel, attached to 3 band EQ.
On paper, it's a win-win.
However, in practice, it's arguably close enough for RnR. The Dimension seemed great until I got a legit 2EQ Stingray 5 and did a side-by-side comparison. The tonality is noticeably different, though it's coming from the same place. I had to radically scoop mids, boost highs and give a little boost to the lows to make the Dimension sound as close to the Stingray as it could.
I say that if you love the Stingray sound, but can't deal with the string spacing, make it right for you. I'll double down that resale be damned, if the mods make a current production model instrument work, go for it.

That’s a beautiful bass - I know, because it’s identical to mine. I wouldn’t ever modify a single thing on it, but I recognize you’re not me - having said that, just from a practical standpoint, you can make a decent buck selling this, and it will sell quickly. Then you can buy whatever you actually like, or have it custom made, or whatever.
Thanks to everyone for your input. I guess deep down I knew not to modify a perfectly fine SR5. So, I now hope to trade it for a wider-spaced Yamaha TRB5PII. If it falls through, I'll list the Stingray on here!
