Should I get an attorney?

Guys, I appreciate everyones input, but my hands are tied and I am simply at their mercy. I live in Illinois, it's a 16+ hour drive to where their storage space is in Louisiana. I just don't have the money to drive/fly or pay for shipping myself. One of the biggest reasons I need the rack back is to unload some of the unnecessary gear I have in the rack, I am that broke.

I already made some calls to the authorities down in LA and they said they could go and get the rack from their storage space if I provided picture and receipts (which I could do, no problem), but then what? I'd still have to drive down there to go get it, which isn't an option.

Let me know if they are playing Hattiesburg, MS. (where I live) again anytime soon. If you have proof that the gear is yours, I will be more than happy to help get your gear back, with or without the help of the local LEO's(youd be better off to use the police to your advantage in this case). Folks around here don't take to kindly to people who steal stuff (esp. musicians) and to be honest would prob. run 'em out of town.

Your doing alot better than I would have, so my hat's off to you sir. Get your gear back the legal way first. And while it won't help you in the long run, I'd have to put my foot in someones ass real good, like a stay at the hospital good(but that's not going to benefit you in ANY way, so don't go get in trouble) Don't trash talk. I know it's hard to do, but as a fellow player told me as I was leaving an act-"take the high road and don't belittle others, shady folks eventually get to the point were folks in the biz won't fool with them at all".

Hope all works out with your situation.

I would have called the police and lawyered up long ago.

They stole your amp, they don't have the right to use it, holding it for your pickup may be okay depending on the situation, but using it is over the line.
Also, stiffing you on a show is unlawful, but you will be greatly helped if you had some previous agreement in writing, without that any progress may be difficult.

Third, who is this band?

Yep, this goes along with that old saying about showbiz, "Be nice to everyone you meet on the way to the top, 'cause you'll meet 'em all again on the way back down."

Seriously, though, this sounds like a job for fellow TBers. There have been several suggestions from folks who live or have connections in the area where the gear is stored. Take them up on their offers of help. If the gear was stored in Toronto, I would gladly round up a posse and go get it for you. Like another poster said, at least you'd know it was safe. We could work out how to get it to you after the fact. The main thing is to get your gear out of the band's possesion as soon as possible.

If a TBer had copies of the required proof of ownership, along with a signed letter from you, stating that they have your permission to take possession of it, perhaps you could at least accomplish that step, although it would probably be best to conduct the transaction with the assistance of the local police, just to keep everything on the up and up.

Just a thought. We are fortunate enough to be part of a rare and exceptional online community of excellent musicians. Wouldn't you do the same for someone else if their gear was being kept in your town?

There won't be any gigs, anytime soon at least, they are in New York writing/recording their new cd.

Yeah, it'd be great if someone went and got it and through a chain of people, slowly but surely my rack made its way back up here. But that's alot of people, alot of miles, and alot of trust. It would only take one sour person and then I would definitely never see my gear again. I don't know guys, I'm beyond frustrated. I just want my **** back and I'm very short on options.

I wonder if we could make some sort of pass off happen from the rigs current location up to you. In other words, have someone from TB who lives in the same city pick the rig up and drive it to another TB`er an hour north, have that next guy drive it up an hour north to someone else, and so on and so forth until it gets to a point where you can drive out and get it. It wouldn`t even have to be done in one day - but this would take some careful planning and a lot of trust.

Oops. Apparently you already came up with the idea :p

I dunno, I think it could work.

Shawn,

Why don't you let us TBer's know about how much $$$ it would cost to ship and how you want it shipped. My bassist brother-in-law in Covington or bandmates could do the shipping logistics.

As far as $$$, can you get that estimated(since you should know how much it weighs by now) and MAYBE some TB'ers can give you a late Christmas present.

Suggestion for your consideration and those reading this thread.
My wife would LOVE a reason to go there(Covington/Mandeville) and see her family but we're not heading north anytime soon...

I actually have no idea how much it weighs. It's a 14 space shock rack. It's got a power amp in it, Avalon U5, rack tuner, power conditioner, rack shelf with my wireless receiver on it, 2 space rack drawer full of cables, and a dbx 131. Over 100 lbs I'm sure. So guesstimating on the shipping cost would be exactly that, shipping could end up costing way more. also, I'm pretty sure it would have to be shipped freight on a pallet because of the size/weight.

you should still do it. i'd trust the authorities with the gear more than i'd trust your lame, crooked former bandmates who are letting their "new" old bassist use it .

Agreed. It's a positive step towards getting the gear back. With the gear in a safe haven, then the OP can breathe a bit more easily while looking for a way to haul it northward, such as kind soul who lives in the area and is willing to pick it up and put it on a Greyhound bus.
