Should I Lend out my Rig?

I expected their to be a majority saying no, but not 100%!

Thanks for the backup on this one guys. I just sent a text to my guitarist telling him to give the band our local music shops number to set up a renting appointment for tomorrow. I just don`t feel secure lending out my main rig to a guy I don`t know - especially (like most of you have mentioned) for a frat party.

Besides, they are probably making near a grand for this gig - they can afford rental fees.

The band's story doesn't make sense. The Mooch story never makes sense, because it's always bullcrap. They can't figure out how to get a sufficient quantity of gear into the cars at their disposal? What kind of serious band would even have that problem? Surely there is something that can be left at home.

Or for jmercer91's friend. He's got a gig on bass and he can't get a bass together? It doesn't make sense.

I have known people who are of a personality type called a Mooch. They get through life by mooching something off every person they meet. They are forceful negotiators. First they will demand an explanation for why you won't loan out your stuff, and then they will twist your words around to make you out to be a liar when you try to explain.

It's never your job to prove why you don't want to loan out your gear. And if you try to explain, you just dig yourself into a hole. Here's all you need to say, with a big smile on your face:

"Sorry, but I can't help. I know you need the gear, but I just can't help. I know you are trustworthy, but I just can't help. I hope you have a really great gig, but I'm afraid that I just can't help."

the only way i would ever lend my rig would be if i couldnt play in my band and my gear was in our trailer , the gig is out of town , and fill ins rig wouldnt fit in the trailer . and with that situation at least all of my guys would be around my rig to make sure it was done right . other than that i say no . most bass rigs on a used budget are still worth 800 or more . i doubt the guy would replace squat if something did happen to your stuff .

Definately a "NO". Even if the bass player handles your equipment with "kid gloves", someone else can damage the equipment. Considering that there is no deposit and no offer of any compensation, I would simply tell the bassist to rent some equipment locally.

It is not worth the headache and aggravation if something did happen to your equipment. You would be upset with your guitarist, you would upset with yourself for loaning the equipment out.

Again, I would say, "NO".

Or they can just mooch a bigger vehicle somewhere.

Guitarist just called and was mad as hell. Apparently I'm turning my back on 'our' friends by not lending out my gear. He tried using the excuse that they are amazing and deserve to use the gear... Whatever that means... Apparently we are watching them play tomorrow as well, which I was never made aware of. I told him to give them the number still, but I'd at least consider it. That said, I don't want to be dragged to a gig just to watch my amp.
