Should I send it back? Opinions, please!

Since you're asking for opinions, I'd just keep it if I liked it. To me, that flaw is background noise for a Squier. It won't affect sound or playability, and shipping stuff back/ fourth sucks valuable time outta life. YMMV :)
I disagree. I have 2 other Squiers (and played several others) that never had QC issues. Just concerned that gouge might start chipping/peeling the finish eventually. The GC I would be returning it to is only 20 minutes from me. So, no shipping to deal with.

I think you've answered your own question! Go exchange it for another one, it'll likely play just as well and by the time next Christmas comes around you'll have forgotten all about this damaged one. Oh and most importantly tell your wife how wonderful she is.
Thank you. And yes, I have expressed my appreciation for her thoughtfulness. It was a huge surprise for me!
