My Rebel Bass is awaiting a new body (yep - it's a 70's Kenner toy!).
I bought this Vox Clubman at a car boot sale; it's now been stripped back and is awaiting a refin (original red-lead colour).

I was just discussing all of this on another thread... And here's what I said:
I've done a custom build AND a parts assembly... And I'm VERY pleased with both.
Like so many of us, I've had Fender AVRI P-Basses over the years... American Standards as well... and after so many years playing so many Fender basses, neither of my "final" P-Basses are actually Fender-built. Besides, I didn't want to have the same basses EVERYONE ELSE had, you know?
The first is my SLAB66; built by Gareth Ishmael in the U.K. He went all in on the research... it was the man's passion (right down to the custom-built pups and the "Fullerton bump" on the horn), and so I trusted him as a builder... the glowing reviews he received also helped me decide to go for it... And I love it... Ash body, and a MusiKraft neck that is satin finished and the best damn neck I've ever played...
Oh, and it's a rubbed-oil finish...
For a hot minute I considered refinishing it with a color, but quickly came to my senses.
$2k, shipped:
The second bass was added more recently... The pups are Lollars with a 920D Custom PB Pre-Wired Wiring Harness, the neck is a Nash, and the body is a nitro finished, MIM Nate Mendell... All other hardware is Fender/Fender licenced... Turned out a little heavier than I wanted (about 11lbs), but it sounds wonderful -- not to mention it has a look I've always wanted but could never quite get from Fender (including the custom pickguard with a wide bevel so the white really pops)!
My local Luther put it together... Mr. Mike Drasin of East Bay Guitar Repair... He did a wonderful job. The parts came together perfectly... It looks vintage, sounds amazing, and I'm not scared to take/play it anywhere... All for less than $1,300 (because I include the case price in the build -- a MONO Vertigo Bass Guitar Case; the only soft case I trust):

I've had so many, but like I said I think this is the end of the road... I think I'm finally done buying basses!!! These are my "final," "signature" instruments!

You know... When I used to play professionally (20+ years ago) I would remove them because they'd kind of get in the way more often than not...
However, now that I play on a much more casual/infrequent basis, I leave them on...
That said, I'll often cycle through periods of having the ashtrays and thumbrests on and off in various configurations...

Nice!! My kind of mongrel! I recently acquired a Kahler, and I’m musing over what type of bass to mount it on. This sways me towards Rick-land!
Modded Squier Mini 28.6" P bass. Only original parts used were the body & neck
