Show me your modified/custom basses!

I call this my '73 Custom Jazz' but I don't know exactly what it is or who built it. I was first attracted to it because the neck is 1-5/8 P-width at the nut but with a fairly shallow depth-profile, both are my preference. The finish appears to be gloss light poly on the 2-piece center-seam ash body, a very-light satin poly on the 4-bolt micro-tilt neck (?!?), but it has nitro on the face of the headstock, several coats both under and over the logo, like in the old-timey times. The pickups are unmarked but look a lot like old Bill Lawrence, they're single coil but comparatively quiet. Plugged-up it sounds very P-like with the neck PU solo'd, but has a classic Jazz-bass mid-honk with both on. Un-plugged it's remarkably resonant. Weight is dead-on 9 pounds with the covers on. I like it.

If I knew how to do wood working I would love to modify one of my Ibanez Mikro PJ basses to be a P/MM with the MM being able to be run as a full humbucker or a single coil like the Jazz pickup. I know the MM can be wired like that as I have a Harley Benton Stingray clone which has a passive humbucker but wired like a J bass with 2 volume controls (one per coil) and a master tone control. When both volumes are fully cranked up you get the full humbucker tone.

For me a P/MM with dual volumes for splitting the coil would in theory give a huge tonal variety from the standard P tone to a PJ tone to a single Jazz tone to a full MM tone and finally the full P/MM together tone.

I thought that too and tried it on another bass, I didn’t care for splitting the coils like that… noisy and kinda thin really. I personally like the humbucker as a humbucker but i do add a series/parallel switch.

Oh, I just meant I don’t care for using a humbucker as a single coil pickup….. the p/mm configuration kicks butt!!!
I typically keep both the p and mm at full and at full, the sound is FULL:)

Oh god yeah I imagine that sounds killer, another config I would love to try would be the JPJ config that I’ve seen Jason Newstead use, would be interesting to hear how that extra Jazz pickup changes the tone.

Another good one is a humbucker sandwiched between a couple jazz pickups..,
I made one of those out of a P bass and averaged the Js placement from a few other TBers measurements on their basses and placed the mm in the music man sweet spot.
Pretty sweet!!
