With my band I'm using a pick, mostly 'cause I couldn't play the material any other way, my fingers are way too old for 3 hours of 8ths and 16ths!
Seriously, with my GK 1001 I keep the bass close to flat and bump up the mids abit, using DR 45-105 sdtainless will give a nice tone with a bit of clankey top, Roto Sound RS66's sound nice too, a bit less clank.
Same as with any other bass - it depends on the song. My band plays a lot of punk and a lot of classic rock. Generally I use a pick on the punk and fingers on the classic rock. We also play some reggae, blues, etc., and I use fingers on them. And pick on anything with a lot of 16th notes. My fingers are old like Tbird1958 said...
When I use a pick I use the heavy (1.14) purple Dunlop Tortex picks. I sometimes use super heavy "Dawg" picks designed for mandolin.
The above is about the same for me...except I'd also add that 90 percent of my 8-string or 12-string bass playing (root-octave types that I use a LOT) is also with a pick -- the larger rounded triangle style in medium.
