Why a man would collect so many thunderbirds. Holy jesus am I addicted to the sound. I finally finished my sx pj project, and didn't really care to play it. Now I'm thinking of selling it to get another t bird. I was worried about how the pups would sound, because of the excessive "they're so muddy" whining. But they're so growly and low/mid-y. I wish there was a passive epi thunderbird V. I guess ill have to start saving for a gibson or a lull.

I bought this sx, put a lot of money in it (straplocks, hipshot ultralights, alpha 250k pots, orange drop cap, etc) making it the perfect bass for me. Then this slightly beat up red t bird comes to town and blows it away. I'm hooked for life.

P.S. Are there sonic differences between the explorer and the t bird? I really love the shape of both, and I've been really GASing for a Natural korina explorer.

"Sanctuary" is an all time favorite of mine! It's almost always on our setlist, never ceases to surprise me how many people know and like that song. We are working up "Lucretia" by Sisters of Mercy as well, we have a very large Goth party to play in mid Nov......it should fit well.

Re: The Explorers, Gibsons are a short scale set neck bass that had it's own pick up design. There were several variations offered with 1, 2 or a piezio pick up and some wood variations including Korina......so quite different from Thunderbirds. Epiphone's basic versions do use the same pick ups but again the Explorers use different woods.

Well I've read that Korina and Maogany have a lot of similarities, however, I do remember that the explorer I saw had a brass nut, which would have to go, if I was going to play it. Too bright sounding.

blendermassacre, don't think about anything else other than selling every material possession you own until you have enough money for a used Gibson Thunderbird. I promise you it will be worth it!

Semi-Heeding your suggestions ($Lindz$) I put the sx on the block today. I think it's the fender sounds. I think that it just doens't have the heuvos for me... When you're 6'5" 300 lbs, you need a bass that sounds like a freight train from hell, and the PJ config just wasn't doing it for me. Back to the basement to play my T-bird.

So THAT's why you wanted my black Hamer...so you could alternate a black one every other one for the photo? I like the gold hardware you added and that you put it back to stock w/o the toggle.

Here it is in it's former life with my Hamer 8-string TBird FBVIII (note the three toggles that go to three outputs...was Tom Petersson's.) Enjoy it!

On the 4: mahogany body, cherry/padauk neck, rosewood fretboard.
On the 8: myrtle body with padauk top, padauk neck, ebony fretboard.

They both sound great, both have tons of sustain. The 8 is a little neck heavy but still manageable. I went for a P style neck shape on both.

I also just recorded a solo bass album with the 4 and used the 8 on part of it for feedback drones [kind of like ambient a keyboard part] that I hope to be putting out soon.

I admire people that do so much with what they have.
