The above is truly a rig of doom. This is a cool thread, not everybody can spend car money on bass rigs. My rig of doom is a step closer to completion, the 1x15 is built but I think I'm gonna drop the extra change for a kappalite3015LF. Then I concievably could run the Tmax full on into the 212, pull the CS800 from the PA rack and use the crossover outs to bi-amp the 15 and the 210 for a ground pounding triple stack. Not that I'll ever need that but rest assured I'll hook it all up at least once.

I like the guy who ended up with a 800rb for $65.
(25 for the broken amp and $40 worth of caps)

I get pretty decent stuff buying/trading used or building but I can't beat that deal.

I don't have it anymore but I wish I would have kept the head.

I traded an old computer for an Acoustic 140. (the computer was given to me to dispose at the next ecycling drop) The Acoustic was 125 watts but it sounded twice as loud. Really miss it.
I then picked up a Hartke XL 410 for $150. These 2 sounded great for $150 invested. I see both of these for sale on a regular basis. I am always on the lookout to pickup another Acoustic.

Need a new picture, but here's my list:

So basically around $600 (after cables, bag, etc.). I really like it, though I'm looking for a second cab to pair with the Bag End.

BX4210A - $330 + tax = $356.40
Eminence loaded 4 ohm 1x12 from dcr - $130
GK BL600 + 4 space rack - $246

I use the GK to power the 1x12, and also send the preamp signal from the GK to the Behringer's power amp. It makes a very loud MacGyver stack.

Acoustic 370: $180 at local used gear emporium
Bag End D15B-B: $150 off craigslist
Two new Bag End speakers to replace the mismatched Peaveys in the cab when I got it: $219
Total investment will be reduced by whatever I get for the Peavey speakers when I finally get around to selling them.

Anyone who thinks 300 watts is not "doom" enough has never played through an Acoustic 370. Trust me, this is plenty "doom".

And, I got the T-40 (w/ohsc) for about $200 shipped off eBay.

It's soon to have the 10" speakers and crossover upgraded majorly... and be recovered in tweed :cool:
(about another $200... in upgrades coming!)


(Chuck, that Bagend 2x15 kills! I had a S15 in birch for a long time)

A friend needed to get some stuff out of his garage...was going to drag it to the curb on the next big-stuff pickup day. The rig:

Ampeg V-6B 2x15 cab (needed speakers resealed and some loose tolex removed.

Fender Bassman 50 head (needed new tubes, sockets, caps DYI~$80)

I haven't yet found a place to play this rig, but it's moderately doomful because of the cab size and the head is pretty loud. Funny to think of a 90 lb cab with just a 50 watt head!

Sorry, no pix of this rig right now and don't want to drag it into the house to take one.

Looks like some 'Doom' parameters need to be set! I'll suggest a few.

Single & 2x10 speakered cabs have to paired with another cab. A 1x15 can be paired with another 1x15.
4x10's, 2x12's, 4x12's and 2x15's (& all things in between) are acceptable alone.
500+watts= Doom
Less than 500watts= Quasi-doom. Not quite doom enough! :D

Someone else will have to determine what is considered 'cheap'!

Ok, I meet the (*)minimum doom requirements w/ 2 1X10s and 500 watts. I bought everything used, so, I guess we'll call it cheap. For some, it may even be mini. It looks mini-ish except it is two cabs. It is certainly light weight.

Head: SWR SM - 500 = $500
Cabs: Acme Low B-1= 2X$200= $400
------------------------------------
$900(+tax of course)

*Does it count if it is not a loud 500 watts AND the cabs are inefficient? Ah, who cares, I love the sound.:hyper:

I have to admit, that rig is going to thunder.

I think a "rig of doom" is one that makes people go :eek:, is generally overkill, and makes some sort of wall at least 4 feet tall, and when the cabs are stacked on their sides, must be at least 32" wide. A rig of doom also must consist of multiple cabs, and have at least four drivers (not including tweeters or small midrange drivers).

So, two 8x10s is a rig of doom. Two 2x15s is a rig of doom. Two 2x10+18s (Peavey 1820) make a rig of doom. Two 4x10s is not a rig of doom. Two 4x12s are a rig of doom, whether they're square 4x12s, or staggered (aka GS412). 2x10s along with any other single cab do not make a rig of doom. In order for 2x10s to be part of a rig of doom, they must be accompanied by much larger cabs as well. Same goes for 1x12s. Nobody is going to go :eek: at a 1x12. Just face it. :rollno:

Wattage isn't that big of an issue. Technically, my rig is just a pair of 100 watt heads, but it's probably one of the louder rigs on here, due to cabinet efficiency. Remember, wattage does not always equal volume (a prime example is the Ampeg SVT-4Pro).

I think I summed it up well enough. Maybe this should go in the FAQ?
