My church cover a wide range of songs, from hyms, to that deep spiritual bluesey kind of gospel, to the younger, hip contemporary stuff due to the wide age range of the members....

Yeah, my church praise band has yet to play any hymns, but we've played a bunch of Christian Rock. Switchfoot, Reliant K, as well as obscure songs by random Christian education societies.

Maybe he's open to hearing an explanation? Just 'cause he's asking doesn't mean that he is hostile.

Maybe he has only been in churches where the music is boring. Or none at all, and made the assumption.

A lot of contemporary inspirational music is anything but boring. In fact, some would say that it has swung too far to the more secular types of music. My personal opinion is that for every genre ofsecular music, there is a similar genre of inspirational music. I've heard (and played) inspirational music that sounds like R&B, jazz, rock, funk, and reggae. Last night one of my groups worked with a a guy to put music behind an inspirational rap that he has written.

Listen to anything by Martha Munizzi, Israel & the New Breed, Fred Hammond and Radical for Christ, Norm Stockton, Tye Tribbett. If that bores you, it would shock me.

MM, I would love to have a hollowbody for church, but it sucks being a poor college student. Id have to sell something to get one. If I had the money Id so have a Rob Allen for church services.

I don't think anyone mentioned any god specifically......this thread is about basses used in church not about God.

I don't know how anybody else feels about this and the picture you chose, but I don't appreciate it. This isn't a discussion of religions thread, but one of guys/gals who play bass in Christian churches and discussing the gear they play. I don't want to sound intolerant or anything, but your post and your chosen picture seems disrespectful to me.

Depends on what style and genre you're playing.

People might think that playing traditional Catholic hymns in Mass is boring (My only gig. ), but I've never come across so many incredible harmonies, complex chord structures, and sheer musical genius in such an openly available package. It's mindblowing.

Not to mention the spiritual and mental benefits. I find it incredibly satisfying to my musical appetite, relaxing, and peaceful, and if "singing is praying twice" (Si = Pr x 2)what does that say about playing? (Ply = Pr x 4)

I was playing "O Sacred Head Now Wounded" and noticed it was harmonized by Bach.
