When I started this thread back in October I was thinking about selling my P to build a double reverse P in a J body. I still plan to do that one day, but right now I'm replacing my old P with a JPJ. The body and neck showed up yesterday...

I really like the idea of a double-reverse-p. But I'm trying to figure out how to try it cheaply.
Any ideas?
If I could find a standard reverse P I would be willing to try routing for the bridge pickup (although I'm not experienced with a router), but I haven't been able to track anything down that's around 300-400.

I'm also thinking I would prefer the pickups oriented such that the E pickups are in the normal neck P and bridge J position with just the D pickups moved toward the neck, instead of keeping the 'centers' in place and moving both E and D pickups. Is there anything like that without going custom?

Edit: My current idea is to get a SX P and reverse the neck first (safe routing due to pg), then add the bridge P after.
...then, if I like everything else, get a good looking neck. :***:

That was honestly the best non MIA Fender I'd ever played. It may have actually been Korean or wherever the non-MIM stuff comes from. The fretwork and playability was stellar for this price range and it sounded like nothing else. I strung it BEAD and gave it a stern setup / intonation and it was like a grunting hog.... I really miss that bass and would scoop another in a heartbeat... But I'm the only one I know ever owned one! If anybody has one they wanna sell PM me!

Back in the late 80's BC Rich USA made a ton of double-P basses.

I was wondering if it might be worth setting it up with switches to chose the two inner coils to give a non-reverse P in/near the StingRay sweet spot as an optional pickup selection. Anyone try this?

That can be done, but the proper halves of the pickups would have to equal RWRP for that inner set- easy as swapping one set of halves around if req'd.

That config would be an extreme of the original P config with the treble side much closer to the bridge than the E/A side, but could work for root/octave playing.

Here's mine - I started with a Yamaha BB300 because the pickup was already installed the "right" way - and added the bridge pickup. Now, I think I want to move the neck pup closer to the neck so it really didn't matter what I started with!

I know with no pics it doesn't exist. Well it actually doesn't exist yet as I just put an order in (now an endorser for Moniker Guitars in Austin TX) for a cream, maple/maple double P, Dixie bass (telecaster/ASAP shape). It's going to look so nice, can't wait! 5 weeks from now....I'll be posting pics.

Nice! How is the balance?

Balance is perfect. I had an extra strap lock button installed right in the middle of the neck joint. That's the one I use. Using the button on the upper "horn" is fine....there's a tad bit of tipping but no actual neck diving. The pic isn't the neck joint of this bass but a bass I put together....you get the idea.
