An important tonal goal for me was to eliminate any possibility of hum when either pickup is soloed. My shielded jazz hums if the pickups aren't balanced. Mainly I wanted to be able to solo the neck pickup to nail the precision tone, which the Mockingbird does just fine.

Yeah, no hum with mine either!! My pickups are a little tiny bit noisy still, but its tolerable high end hiss, those dimarzio's are 2 years older than I am though..

Steve (and sevdog). That bass has the pickups oriented about the same as mine - both reverse with the neck pickup in standard P position which leaves very little space between to neck and bridge pickups.

I notice on mine that with the pickups very close to the strings -- and in my case, the bridge and neck pickups being the same model pickup - so the bridge is NOT a hotter pickup -- I have to have the bridge pickup very close to the strings to get the levels balanced between bridge and neck. And I find that it's a little awkward for finger style over the bridge pickup - and there is no space between. When I'm plucking over the neck pickup, it feels totally normal but when I start moving towards the bridge my fingers notice the weirdness of having a split pickups (you feel the pickup on two strings and then it drops away under the other two strings- mainly because it is so close to the strings). Just wondering if sevdog notices that or if you get used to it and it's not an issue.

And as I posted earlier - I'm thinking of trying a much hotter pickup in bridge position, then I can lower it and probably won't notice it when plucking over the bridge pickup.

Well, if I'm understanding your questions correctly I think it's a yes to both.

I definitely have the neck pickup set lower than the bridge pickup, but my Jazz basses are the same so it doesn't bother me.

With regards to the distance from b-g, I have the high side slightly lower (further from the strings) but not drastically so it has never bothered me. Regular P-basses are usually the same...but definitely depends on the pickup.

So, that probably doesn't help any but neither of those 2 things have ever bothered me.

I listened to the video above once again, The bridge P is really nice. I am done thinking, I will put an order for a Performance YBR-6 bass. Jazz up front. P in the bridge. I was having a hard time trying to decide if I should just get a jazz bass but the video above has convinced me of the possibilities of a P in the back.

I listened to the video above once again, The bridge P is really nice. I am done thinking, I will put an order for a Performance YBR-6 bass. Jazz up front. P in the bridge. I was having a hard time trying to decide if I should just get a jazz bass but the video above has convinced me of the possibilities of a P in the back.

No, thank you to you. I was really close to getting the jazz and I even called Performance about their bass because I wanted to hear directly what the owner/luthier had to say about their bass guitars. He directed to towards the JP configuration. This video confirmed my thoughts about the rear P pickup. The bass will cost well over 3400 US dollars because I will get a custom paint job and with shipping overseas, it should be more like 3700 or 3800. It's a lot of money. There aren't a lot of JP videos worth anything on the internet so this video helped me to make the right decision.

Incidentally Marcin Pendowski's video on Xotic XB-2 actually persuaded me to buy one just last month. You could say he's helped me save a lot of homework, money, and time. LOL

Anyway thanks for pointing out the video. Much appreciated.
