I played the first semi hollow last night. My good friend owns it...a 4 string fretless. To be honest I walked in with no expectations at all. It turned out to be the single best fretless bass that I've ever played. It has none of the dynamic limitations that are associated with an electric bass. NONE. The most dynamic bass I've ever heard. No compression when you dig in. It just keeps going. It has a HUGE low end....I can't believe the bass is only 2" thick. Absolutely no need for a preamp in these basses. I could go on and on, but suffice it say...Martin has created something very special. I'm incredibly excited about my upcoming semi hollow.

There was an unfortunate machine malfunction that blew out the sides (these things do happen occasionally unfortunately). I know Martin is getting real close.
You know the drill: pics or it didn't happen. I hope it was filmed in 4k 3D.REALLY soon.

Not sure Martin wants that pic out there...he was pretty heartbroken. It's all good.
Tell Martin we know he is a master builder of builders. If it happened, it was the machine, not him.

I can see why he was broken-hearted! That was quite a bit of work that just went *poof* in a split second
On a positive note, it's a very nice semi hollow design and I dig that you're keeping mahogany back and sides like your previous bass (just beautiful).
That's terrible. Is it salvageable at all, or do the sides have to be totally rebuilt? Can't wait to see the final product.
Thanks for the photo. It really was educational, seeing the construction detail of the centerblock and kerfings. Sad that the damage happened, but shee-ittt happens, sometimes (BTDT in other ways).
I believe the center section was reused. Also, we're using the neck from the original fully hollow prototype, so this one is really close. This one will have a single Nordstrand pickup in the P Bass location. Passive. Simple and effective.
Yeah...mahogany back and sides with I believe a spruce top. I left a lot up to him. The center is a soft wood as well. Not sure what he chose. The neck is mahogany/spruce (with a thin, internal graphite layer) and an ebony fingerboard. I believe he's developed a wooden bridge for it that can be intonated properly. He mentioned something to a friend of mine. Again, I'll be just as surprised as everyone else.
