Played a jazz gig at a local winery Friday. It was 104 degrees in the shade - whew! Gear included:

  • Fearless 110 (tweeter on full, no attenuation on the mid-range driver)
  • TecAmp Puma 900 (all settings flat)
  • Rob Allen Deep 4 fretless with black nylon tapewounds (all settings flat)

The bass sounded massive -- deep, rich, and full. Nice! Here's a clip:

nice stuff Ukiah. The bass sounds great. Like your guitarist's playing too. Sorry I didn't get to see what the rhythm guitarist and drummer looked like. ;) Seriously - like that a lot, very nice tune by Pat as well.

Ha ha! :) Thanks for the compliment! As a duo, we use a loop on about 2/3 of our songs to fill in the sound and add interest. Being in a country environment, it's hard to find good musicians to play with us, who are willing to put in the work, and lay off the weed.

I started this project playing a Fender Aerodyne jazz bass (but with the P pickup only). Now I've switched to the Rob Allen Deep 4 fretless. It's a perfect match for Charlie's jazz guitar and provides a rich, organic feel to the music. I'm very happy with this bass!

Yes, I crave a Deep 4 fretless myself. I can't quite justify the price tag at this time, though. When I play music along the lines of what's on your clip, I use a 1978 fretless Fender P that is a very nice bass in its own right. But it's not as nice as that Deep 4.

They are pretty expensive. Too expensive for me, at least fresh out of the RA store.

I was fortunate to find one used here on TB. It was exactly what I had hoped it would be.

Now if I could just find a used RA Solid 4 ...... :)

Yeah, the D4 is not cheap especially depending on options you get, etc. Now on my second (wonder who owns the first one now? heh :ninja:), I can say without a doubt anything related to how expensive it is fades away when you play it.

Over time my needs changed a bit, and my D4 was one of Rob's (if not the) first made (much like my S4 was the first one of those). My two D4s were almost 10 years apart and I could see the subtle refinements he's done, which is cool.

Rob also really listens to you about your sonic needs, neck thickness, etc., and crafts a bass for you. Some say that's all hogwash, but I can tell you it's not. Each time I've worked with Rob (the second D4 being my third bass from him), he knows me better, and what I got is pretty darn close to perfect.

So if you can ever save the scratch, I say go for it. I've played used RAs (a few different Mice [lol] and some MB-2s) that were more 'stock' - they're fine instruments. Can't go wrong. But getting one tailored to your needs/playing style can't be beat. You're not getting an Allparts P or J copy here :)

I 've got a Mouse - lined/FL. It is one of the most amazing basses I have ever owned. Nothing fancy when it comes to woods, though. I choose the cheapest option /walnut), but I still think it looks great :-)

I Will never part with this one.
