i have a ashdown mag 300 question ? is the input knob sth like gain ? or do i normaly turn the input all up and make the final sound with the output knob ???
It's not exactly like gain. It controls the strength of the input signal being sent to the preamp. Think about how some amps have separate inputs for passive and active instruments, with the difference usually being a -10db (or so) pad on the active side. Instead of going that route, Ashdown delivers one input jack and a knob that provides a continuously variable input strength.

What you want to do is find the knob setting that makes the VU meter move up to but not beyond the final 20% or so of its range when you play. Then leave the knob there and make your other volume adjustments with the output level knob.

The input knob is NOT intended as a drive adjustment knob, as with a normal gain knob.

Caveat - all this comes from my perspective as an MK500 owner; it could perhaps be different on the MAG models, but I do not think so.

thanks.... i was afraid of blowin the speakers or sth
so with my passive jazz with barts i really can tunr the input now 3/4 up ?

... and ... how far is your input and output know turned ?
Don't think about how much my knob is turned - just play your bass into the amp and find the spot where the VU meter approaches but does not move into the red part on the right. That will be the right setting for your bass.

Enjoy!

ok, thanks. but that means i can turn the unput almost all the way up and the output 3/4 .... it just seems too to me?!

cant i destroy the speaker or sth ?
Many Bartolini pickups have low-ish output levels (I have some like that in one of my Yamahas), so your need to crank the input knob isn't too concerning. If you turn the output knob up to 75%, in normal circumstances youwould be playing pretty loud. Additionally, the ashdown amp section does most of its output ramp-up in the first 120 degrees or so of knob travel - after that it doesn't get much louder normally. So it sounds like there is something else happening with your setup. If you can, check to see if your bass provides satisfactory output through another amplifier.

Don't have pictures with me, but I'm playing an ABM 300 EVO II through an SWR 12-pack (2x12, the ugly 'oxblood' red one)

I'm planning on building a clone of the cab using eminence drivers, then re-tolexing both cabs and putting cloth grill covers on them (want to look more vintage/retro, think old Fender 2x12's)

The Ashdown head is the closest I've found to all tube tone in a hybrid head. And it's loud for only 320 watts!

does anyone have or have had the MAG 600 model? I'm looking into purchasing that to go w/ an Avatar 2x12 + 2x10 stack. I've narrowed my GAS down to either the Ashdown MAG 600H or the Carvin B800 if they are still available. Any opinions or reviews of the 600? Thanks
