Bartman,My most recent acquisition. P body, J neck, weighs only 7.5 lbs.
Strung with flats, it oozes tons of old-school mojo.
Did you buy that bass as-is? Or piece it together?

This is a assembly job I did for a client in the Nashville area utilizing a couple MIJ Fender parts gleaned from eBay. Outside of the DS pickup, star grounding, and threaded inserts in the neck, this is a pretty stock P-bass with a .047uf cap in the passive tone pot. I also utilized a Hipshot Vintage bent plate bridge instead of a standard Fender issue - I really like the added umph! it brought to the pallate
This is an Ibanez Artcore I upgraded for a client in the Wash DC area. The Dark Star was loaded into the original pickup location, but the cavity required significant deepening so the DS would fit.
This is one of my own creations that puts a slight twist onto the traditional P-bass design. The DS is installed so that the pole pieces are aligned with the traditional D/G 'lead pickup' position. This bass also utilizes a 2-piece Alder body, star grounding and the traditional .047uf cap in the tone pot.
Another one that is nearing completion, and is seen here with a paper pickguard template in place and the blank tort pickguard material ready to cut as soon as I have the routing template ready. I'm still tossing between utilizing cloverleaf or Y-key tuners on this one. The DS pickup is located towards the neck from a traditional P-bass location - in the same position as the black P-bass prototype I posted earlier in this thread. There is a definite sweet spot here that a Dark Star brings to life. This bass features a 2-piece Alder body with an oil finish, a Hipshot Vintage bent plate bridge, and a .047uf cap in the tone pot.
Lastly, I have this DS loaded bass under construction. It's a 2-piece Alder body with bookmatched quilt Maple top. When completed this will have black hardware, a V/V/T configuration with .047uf cap, and a Hipshot Vintage bent plate bridge. The neck is quartersawn Maple with a Cocobolo fretboard, and includes two graphite pulltruded stiffening bars.

I bought the bass as is, from TBer 4mal. FWIW, it was one of the most popular basses at yesterday's GTG, getting more playing time than either of my Reverends, or even my Sadowsky. LOTS of rave reviews.
It is a 57 RI P body, with a well-worn '62 RI Jazz neck, which has the edges of the fingerboard rounded over, along with the fret ends. The body has a LOT of routing under the pickguard to make it lighter, and the tuners were swapped out with lightweight ones so it's not neck-divey despite the routing.
The Dark Star, coupled with the TI flats, gives it a monster tone.
To paraphrase 4mal, "Most Frankenbasses turn out lousy and often get broken up into parts. Once in a while, though, everything works out really well, and you get an amazing bass." This is one of those magic basses, where the total is greater than the sum of the parts.
Setup/construction was done by 4mal's tech, who does the most amazing setup on a bass I've ever seen. The basses that guy works on play like a dream, and this is no exception.
FWIW -- I'm not selling, and if I did, there's already a waiting list.

Wow! The Dark Star logo on the headstock is a nice touch. That's a great looking bass.I sprayed the finish and assembled this one from parts. It sold to somebody in Canada.

Believe it or not, the DarkStar's got plenty of presence, even when shoved up against the fingerboard.

Yeah I'd really like to know that also. How does that VB4 sound with a single Darkstar at the neck. It's really beautiful simplicity.
