OK, thanks in part to this thread, I'm now the proud owner of a DarkStar-equipped Skyline Glaub. I've only had it a week, and it has some half-dead rounds on it, but I already love this thing. Oh, such fat, rich toneful goodness! I hate to say it, but it makes my beloved P-bass sound thin by comparison.:eek: I'm going to throw some Chromes on this next and see what happens.

And yes, I've found stock P basses to be less interesting tonally than my DSP.

Some day you might try turning the pickup around to see which way you like better -- adds a little more grind, at the cost of a tiny bit of low end. Both ways are different flavors of great. :)

I think you'll flip when you throw the chromes on it. :bassist:

Thanks, Bartman! You know I dig that DS'd Frankenfender of yours.:)

I have a really nice P (Fullerton-era '57 RI), so I'm sure I'll rediscover its distinctive charms at some point, but this bass is really doing it for me right now. I'm soon going to have Chromes on both of them, so it should make for an interesting A/B session.

And yep, someday I'll definitely turn the pickup around to see how much I like that, thanks for the suggestion!

just added one to my 1978 Guild B-301. i have 2 more darkstars on the way for the guild, should be in my hands by the end of this week. i will post pics once all 3 are in. also has a custom phonelic pickguard. all work courtesy of Petillo Guitars.


is there any other fretless darkstar basses?? i don't think i saw any in the previous replies....

That is a seriously cool Guild!

I'm glad someone finally did a Grabber. I'd been thinking about attempting something similar to try to ascertain the best location for a single DS... I have thins feeling that it's a little to the rear of a P sweet spot.

That clip i did of the grabber had the front and rear positions of the sliding pickup. theres not a whole lot of tonal difference to be honest, the neck position is a little louder. On the record the first half is bridge side, the second is neck side
