Anderson Canyon - which is topographically the most similar piece of property to Esalen. Esalen is about 3 miles south of McWay. However, I also lived at Esalen extensively (my father was one of the two co-founders).



Yep! That was my yard as a kid. Rent on the entire property was $35 a month. Sold about 10 years ago for $32M... Henry Miller had lived in the same house.

That was a brilliant way to end the show. The Coke commercial is considered one of the best if not "the best" commercials ever made. Leading one to wonder if Don found peace and still continued in advertising? Finding peace is like saying, "I am happy with what I have and who I am," while advertising drives you feel like you need something else or to be something else to find happiness.

I loved the ending in that it could be read either way - a genuine epiphany or a cynical exploitation. I did think that was the best/most accurate pop culture depiction of Esalen.

Not necessary "the best moments" but I love the Chromatics scene. As weird as TP got (and it got seriously weird) - the soap-opera quality remained strong.

Me and some friends used to sneak into Esalen late at night after surfing all day, down through the garden grabbing some herbs to soak with in the tubs. I don’t have the literary skills to describe the magic so I’m not going to try. In hindsight I may not have been hanging with the most “upscale” crew in that point in time down there. I will say that we conducted ourselves very respectfully when we were there, no drugs or any other b.s. period was the rule.

Trying to bridge the distressed finish/Esalen gap... BTW typo in my previous post, I did the refin in BMM on the '64 in the early 90's, not 80's. Here's a shot with a '60 Fiesta Red (never should have sold that one...) playing a Halloween party there:

And in much headier times (this was 3 or 4 weeks after Woodstock) - a lot of cool vintage gear then new - on the deck of the Esalen pool:

My very first vintage Fender was a '61 custom color black with green guard P-bass (bought out of the classifieds in BAM magazine which some SF Bay Area people may remember). Wish I had some photos of it (or, better yet, the bass itself).

I've seen Fiesta stacks go for over $30K recently... Any original stack can easily go over $10K. I paid $900 for it in LA in the mid 80's (before I worked at Real).

Yah, I've seen prices for vintage Fender basses near that at CME but usually it's guitars that go for that kind of bread. I doesn't surprise me. I bought my '64 T-bird II w/OHSC in closet-queen condition in '78 for $700. Another $50 would have bought a mint IV - an additional $50 was more than I could spend then! (and I could only afford $700 because that's how much my renters insurance gave me when my '63 II was stollen) I recently saw a guy on the T-bird fb page we're both on who owns the only other '63 II still in the world. If I still had that stiollen '63 - it would for sure be worth over $10k. Who knew then? (A: not me!)

Yeah, way more if in nice shape - easily $25k + these days.

I bet that black ‘61 was amazing! Something about a black P Bass with a green guard, quite a rare color on a pre-cbs bass as well.
