I think that bass may have been played a lot. It’s all worn out!! Trade ya this brand new Fender for it!!!

Yep, it’s part of the old Gretsch string mute system. It’s the rubber pad…the vast majority of which cracked and degraded to unusability.

When I first got my 1965 6120, the pop-up string mute (or "Muffler" as Gretsch called it) worked perfectly. I remember using it to play the rhythm to "Blue Moon" and the lead on "Wheels". A lot of folks hate the mute, but being a gadget guy, Gretsch's Webster-ized features always appealed to me...

Some of the wear is no doubt real but I just don't think the wear on the upper sides was 'player worn' -
