I lost one of those Fender Bassman 4x12s in a house file long ago. Ugh.

I was told that it was a factory re-spray 3TSB over original Oly Wht. I'm not sure as I am definitely not an expert on old fenders (even though I like them a lot) but it is definitely a hard thick white base. The cracks that are visible in the finish are right into this layer. I suspect the bass has seen a fair amount of heat. I also suspect that it is not the original neck as the fretboard and back of the neck are nowhere near as distressed.

That is entirely possible (3TSB over Oly wht) and would explain its consistency.The neck's (after CBS took over) were shot with thick poly finishes and usually hold up better than the nitro finishes which were still being used through the late 60's on the bodies. I'm guessing yours is a late 60's? Sunburst was the colour most sold so it would have been likely that they shot a number of 3TSB over colours to meet demands at the time.

Wish it was mine. It's for sale on consignment in a store. Was told it was a 1970. Plays and sounds awesome.

Yep, it's most likely an early '70 as the transitions happened mid-year at Fender. Being a factory re-finish, they probably stayed w/thin nitro as it's flaking off like that.
