Actually, after some research, this appears to be the after pic. Notice the neck is cleaned up, the crack is gone, and the frets are all there and shiny, as is the bridge.

Good article - my favorite line that goes out to all tb'rs who rant over vintage mods:
"But more to the point, consider this: unless you’re flying in executive class in the vintage market, if some fool hadn’t mucked up that old guitar or amp, you probably wouldn’t own it right now."

What is barely touched on in the article though is that a lot of "vintage mods" were done at a time in which the word 'vintage' was barely mentioned. Players altered their instruments for a myriad of reasons and did so because, well - it was their instrument. A prime example is a pre-P/J bass, especially a pre-Fender P/J. (as they were late to the party) Players had P basses, routed in a J and Bob's yer' uncle. Pu's and bridges were no-brainer mods. Strip the finish? In the late 60's/early 70's it was the 'natural' thing to do and everyone including Sir Paul did it. In these days of hyper vintage ($$$) 'investments' - it's more about commerce than what a player decides to do or not to do to/with their personal instrument.

Case in point - completely stock, 1964 T-bird II bought "closet classic" used in '78, added a Seymour Duncan "Hawkbucker" bridge pu in '87, and recently installed Scott Dawson's Badbird bridge… and never for an instant looked back. (hint - it's my bass and it's a player as of today in real-time) Oh.., including the ebony/abalone pg also...

That P bass is the very definition of "work horse!"
Lately I've seen pics of old Fenders like that jazz bass that look like the finish has gone really really brown, especially maplenecks, more so than being played by a smoker. Anybody know why?
I just read the ad for that last jazz bass today. The finish is described as being "buffed in many places." and the back of the neck sanded. Still 17 grand might be a good price.

. I try not to look at the prices. Gives me GAS pains. I'm a year younger than that bass and I don't feel like I'm worth 17 grand. Oh well. Maybe I need a good 'buffing' ?
Man I've been looking for the resto thread on that red bass for the last year. I sure hope it was documented somewhere. I wish whoever that guy is, I think he's a member here, would let us all enjoy the journey. I love it just the way it is and would rock it without hesitation, and with gusto!
