Interesting that although this great distressed '65 bass is $10,000 a perfect and correctly restored one owner lefty '65 jazz is available in Canada for $8,000. I've heard a paint job on vintage guitars lowers the price 40%.

It's is odd at times but it's true. I've known the store owner 30 years, have done a fair amount of paintwork for him and learned a ton of history from him. Absolute fairest guy in the business. Very knowledgeable and has done amazingly well yet still down to earth. I've seen scores of beautifully playable refins that go for a good chunk less than all original yet practically unplayable ones. It's funny that way but I guess the refin/refret/re-pot, etc is the "revisionist history" version...pretty but not as accurate lol.

Since I don't live in the rarified air of pre-CBS Fender collectors, a refinish over a vintage bass (body) means I have the core of what I want in the finish/state of condition I want for a cost I can afford. Even if I could, I wouldn't drop that kind of money on any bass. Always nice to look at, but I don't ever get worked up about wanting one.

before: stripped '66 Jazz body with marginal DIY 'walnut' finish. Importantly for me - it is a Fender made in 1966, it is fairly light weight, and I could justify its cost.

Yah, I'd have to say that is a pretty impressive collection. (including a '66 Marauder prototype!) A couple of nice '64 T-birds (both I & II) also. I wish my '63 I hadn't been stolen in the late 70's. I never see a '63 I or II for sale or in a collection - if one comes up it would have to go for north of $10k in any condition. (including my stollen T-bird if it's still in one piece!)

Thats a beauty! And the only vintage stuff of that age Ive had, I got the same way. Almost always from Dave, usually he would have something cool that had been somehow disturbed or molested and I would get it reasonable and respray it or whatever and always wound up with a great bass that played amazing and was cosmetically appealing to me. I cant afford that level of cork sniffery, but Dave always helped me get great deals on those instruments (usually in trade for paintwork even) and I still drive to LaX, WI to do business with him. Im cool with a cleaned up affordable old bass any day!

Great amp for your bass :)

Mine has thousands of dates on it, with most of the tubes original.
The worn patch on the back is from putting it in my gig car long ago, a '66 vette.

There are basses, they are just very much in the minority. His basses alone would be some peoples "collection".

Yeah, thats why I said a couple of hours LOL, scroll through photo gallery if you ever have time. All images are in large format if you click the thumbnails and gives you some history. Dave is the cat.
