Show your Les Paul style bass!

I played my first at a crappola music store not long ago. Just a basic Epi one, nothing fancy, but it sounded killer. I was pretty surprised. The neck was immense, but I had no real issues with it. They only watned 200 and it was pretty much in mint condition. Kinda wish I'd taken it now in retrospect. Oh well, maybe someday. I swore I would only ever like EB-3s when it comes to GIbson/Epi basses, but this thread may have changed that for me for good.

I'll tell you. For the money I don't know if there is anything better than an Epiphone. I don't own many of their basses, but if they are anything like their Archtops, both hollow and simi-hollow body models, you'll not find better value for your money. I have a Gibson ES335 and an Epiphone Sharaton, for example, and I'll tell you, they are both great instruments, but the Gibson isn't worth 5x the money, nor is it 5x the guitar that the Sharaton is.

The same may very well be true regarding the Les Paul bass. The bridge on mine (Gibson) is absoluty great. The one on the Epi is more like what you will find on the typical Gibson basses, three-pointer, which is fine. So, the Epi Les Paul is probably a great bargin for the money and would probably do most people well. :hyper:

And I concur with you, you may have done well to snatch up that Epi bass. For the bread, how could you go wrong! :D :p

The Gibson vs Epi is like most US bass brands in that the US version is more expensive, but holds its value better than its asian made counter point used. The other issue with a lot of Epis is they use less expensive materials hardware, building techniques (Laminated tops on plywood or cheaper wood bodies). They do not sound the same as their name sakes but are close approximations.

The JC & new Epi Pro bird are on their own level. Also the Japanese Elite series were high quality.

With any bass purchase, buy used and get the best deal.

I know! It was really pretty too (as most Epis I have seen do manage to pull off without much trouble, even if the QC is a bit off). Red with all black hardware. I really want some type of Epi hollowbody guitar, since I don't play enough to warrant the cash for a Gibson or high end Gretsch, and all the ones I have found and tried seemed great for the money. The only reason I don't own mroe Epi basses is that I generally don't care for the Gibson design quirks (not a flame, just a preference)

resurrecting this thread, I'd like to see more les paul bass candy.

I'm planning a 5 string les paul bass build, just bought the wood today. The entire bass is going to be hand carved from a single piece of high grade dominican mahogany, inspired by jens ritters creations. No need to worry about neck joints or bad headstock joints. This is rock hard. I plan on staining the wood blue like the limited edition gibson money bass, and using a 35 inch scale. Controls would be 2 tone 2 volume, and no pickup sleector. Where the pickup selector normally goes I'm putting a led on off switch, going to put blue Leds on the neck. For the fretboard I have some local iron wood (guayacan) which is very nice, that or maybe get some rosewood, but I really want to keep the bass with home grown woods. The rest I have'nt decided on. Want a high mass bridge, maybe a 5 string version of what those gibson limited edition bass of the week les pauls had...

My old ESP LTD EC-404, really liked the bass but was VERY heavy and had bad neck dive.

Livinglow that bass is awesome, I've been looking all over for the name of that bridge, what do they call those 2 piece bridges?

That style of bridges is called a tune-o-matic bridge. I believe they are sold in 5 string format. If you can't find it with the regular hardwarebuilders, maybe you could try warwick? They have an inhouse design very similar, maybe you can buy one from them?

I just got a Frankenstein Les Paul-type bass from Lestrange my friend that builds genuinely crazy basses and guitars.
This is a short scale bass with a Les Paul-guitar body from some German DIY-kit and a neck from some old Greco-bass.
Two humbuckers makes It rumbles and moans...I love it!

My GOD man! That's a crazy cool bass! Grats!

I really like this Bass for its looks and not to Shabby tone,

But I have to say my Ultimate dream bass, is Gibson L/P Deluxe premium! If anyone knows where I could find one let me know Do they still make them? Thx.
