Show your Les Paul style bass!

Here are my "LP Style" German Hofners:

IMG_4923.JPG

Lately, I'm gigging the Gold Top the most (still prefer the 1962 500/3 for rehearsals).

I don‘t own one of these, but I just stumbled upon a nice looking Ibanez ‚lawsuit‘ copy from 1971, a goldtop LP bass, which is for sale on a German website.
I love vintage instruments, but I‘m not really into the LP style, otherwise this might have been an NBD post... dunno about the price though, 850€ seems a bit high for me?

Hi guys,
I just bought this bass the other day. It's a Epiphone Les Paul bass, supposedly a limited edition. I still don't know what to think of it. I haven't found out yet how the controls work. I think that the chicken head pot can turn the humbuckers into single coils. At least the hum suggests that :-D.
I could have either bought a really expensive Gibson with Bartolini pickups or this Epiphone with those strange PUs. I chose the less expensive instrument but don't know exactly what I bought.

Could anybody give me some (or a lot of) background information about this bass? How does it compare to a "real" Gibson ?
Thanks in advance!

It's probably on par with the other versions of Epiphone Les Pauls in terms of construction. Thinner top veneer, cheaper electronics and pickups, poly finish etc. Someone here sold one with replacement EMG pickups.
5-string Epiphone Les paul - carved flame top, EMG BQC - FS or part out

Back in the 70’s I had this Les Paul Custom bass copy. It was light weight with a short scale neck with a guitar sized body, made in Japan. I don’t remember playing it long and I already owned a Gibson Les Paul Triumph Bass that was Just too heavy on a 4 hour gig. I can’t recall selling most of my basses but I’ve owned at least 60 in my 57 years as a bass player.A354712F-AD8D-4625-96A2-DF79FD9349EF.jpeg

OK, might as well jump on the band wagon, here's an Epiphone Les Paul Express 22" scale guitar that I converted to a bass about 4 years ago, and a Gold Tone ME Microbass (almost Les Paul style) that I bought on closeout a couple of weeks ago with Aquila Thundergut poly strings.

Things have changed since I did my last post. I gave the burst LP Express guitar conversion to a member of my ukulele group, she started to learn bass and had a loaner but had to return it. I also couldn't warm up to the Gold Tone, so I sold it. I then bought another LP Express 22" and instead of doing the conversion myself, I had it converted by Eric's Guitar and painted by Pat Wilkins, to my design. I added the stick-on fret markers. It came out great.

Wow - one your builds?

Hey Thanks!

It's from scratch, and we designed it together - but this one is by Keith Horne of Marvin Guitars in Los Angeles. Keith is a huge Les Paul fan and has built many Les Paul guitars over the years. Paul Reed Smith donated the top and back to me for the project. There is a build thread on it, let me know if you are interested....

Hey CyberHawk

Thank you!

When Keith shipped it out to New York from L.A. the finish was damaged in transit. I was waiting to get glamour shots until after I ship it back to Pat Wilkins and get it re-finished, which will be a while yet. Here are the other shots that Keith took post-assembly:

And some shots earlier on that Pat Wilkins took before the final coats of nitro semi-gloss were applied:

As you can see there is no cavity cover so Keith had to assemble the electronics using tweezers going through the purposely over-sized jack plate. Since it's medium scale and there are not many around - I call it "Medium Rare".
