I saw the thread title and thought, "Man, an orange bass would be cool to have. Wait.....my Yamaha is orangy!!!!!"
I also got this Warmoth/Fender mutt bass, but whoever applied the clear coat didn't use enough hardener and it never fully cured. So it was tacky and picked up whatever it came into contact with! So I refinished it in trans black (I was going for the Fbass/Roscoe 'Ceruse' look with the white enhanced grain).
This is more accurate of the color (front bass):
This is the bass now w/ white EMGs, a Kahler fixed bridge, Moses fretless righty neck, and some woodwork done to extend the lower cutaway (the upper if used lefty). It will someday get a strat style jack to get the cord out of the way!

Every piece of wood used on that bass is Maple. The rest is Kevin Brubaker and his imagination/paint booth at work
The top has some pretty cool figuring so he bookmatched it, then did a slight grain enhancement (darkening) before doing a seal coat. Then Translucent colors went on, along with matte black for the back of the neck and ramp. Sounds simple. He also did that dark accent line between the top and back with paint.
I get a similar reaction with the black Birdseye maple board on one of my other sixes... looks like Birdseye Ebony, which I don't think exists.
