for the last few years i was a volume up tone up split coil pickup kinda guy. i got a new band now and i want a sort of different sound, so i just barely roll back the volume knob on the p pickup to mellow it out, have the j pickup barely on, and the tone knob rolled back a little bit

My Fender P Bass Plus is the only official Precision bass I have with a PJ layout...

But if you're looking for anything else with a PJ layout I also have a Spector....

and a Pedulla fretless...

I love everything about this thread...I'm GASing for a PJ right now, but the term 'p/j' is hard to search on the search function.

My budget is $1k, whats the best P/J new or used? Fender Am Dlx P? (costs a little more used I know)

I've played a lot of PJ basses (one of my favorite layouts) and the best sounding ones have consistently been the P bass plus from the late '80's and early '90's. They can be found on eBay and other places for between $500 and $1000. There's a really nice one on there right now...

They hold their value very well and have been going up in price over the last few years.

My P/J (the very first pic in the thread) is a mid-80's MIJ Fender that I paid $150.00 for about 15 years ago. I dumped about $700 into it for:

Bill Lawrence pickups
Badass II bridge
Hipshot D-tuner
A shop to do the routing/wiring :D

So I got a smokin' P/J for less than 1K and a bit of work. I'm sure you could pick up an inexpensive MIM Fender or a Squier and trick it out if that's the route you want to take.

Man, I am LOVING my Bill Lawrence pickups. I can't say enough about them.

Yeah ! the bridge pickup was designed by Bill for Fender.. they match great...

not my Bass but a great picture of the bridge pickup.... I have the 2+3 P pickup still, but it was too wide to use (Fender is 19mm at the bridge and mine is 17.5mm) My Bass is all blurry looking :hmm:

Here's mine.

Oh man - is that a 2011 Closet Classic Precision Bass Pro?!?!?! Ever since I saw those I have been DYING for one :hyper::hyper::hyper:

To be honest, if it had a maple neck with black block inlays it would be nigh-perfect, but I would take it as is any day of the week. Easily one of the best things Fender has released in recent years.

How does it sound/play? Got any samples?
