ive noticed a ton of people have a power amp as opposed to a head, is there any advantage to this? does the sansamp sound much different with a power amp than when its in front a head?

Since this is the "Show your Rack" thread, you are going to find plenty of pre/power amp setups. Two major advantages to having a pre/power setup is: power amps generally come in a wide range of power capabilities and much flexibility (stereo, mono, parallel, bridged, etc.) They are also higher powered and cheaper-per-watt than most heads. The second benefit is that, with a head, you're stuck with it's EQ and tone shaping section. If you don't like it, you have to ditch the whole thing, whereas with a pre/power setup, you can just swap the pre out and keep a kickass power section on hand at all times.

As for the RBI through a power amp...it's such a great sounding pre on its own that yes, it sounds wonderful through just a power amp.

Here you have it. my complete stage rig. the only thing that I don't take on the road is the Alesis mixer and my furman board isn't in the picture. Also, in the rack is a DOD Real time analyzer. I threw it in there not because it does anything other than look cool.
Nice setups everyone. Always something to work on.

plus poweramps (like the QSC) have a better damping factor than most power-sections of heads... meaning better response on the low end.

Finally getting around to posting a shot of my rack. Since it's mostly homebrew or not typical bass stuff, here's a summary from the top slot down.

  • Homebrew preamp/tube emulator/three-band parametric/BBE processor/tuner. Yeah, it says "Sound Bite Labs BP1" on it... there's no such company or model. I get fewer questions from Joe Average when stuff doesn't look home-grown. (Bassists, on the other hand, are probably gonna ask 'cuz they know what's out there. But them, I don't mind talking to about gear. ;) )
  • Yamaha SPX90, a leftover from my keyboard days, now mostly used for flanging and echo on one or two songs. Modified with a high-output mono jack and a new power supply after the old one bit the dust.
  • Ventilation panel. I'm planning to build a line voltage monitor and an outlet checker into one end of this panel so I don't have to keep up with my separate ones.
  • SWTPC Tigersaurus 210A power amp. About 250W into 8 ohms. Modified into a rack-mount with an edge-reading power meter. This one truly amazes me -- it's a 30+ year old kit amp that's still going strong. (I have a Crest Audio 901 as a backup though, just in case!)
It's all sitting atop an Avatar B210 Neo, but the photo was small and grainy enough without trying to cram the cab in too.

Thanks, everyone, for contributing to this thread. I've truly enjoyed seeing what everyone's using, and I've learned quite a bit from the discussion, too!

Cheers,
'rick

I don't have a pic, but my rack consist of (from top to bottom):

Samson UHF Synth 32 wireless
Furman Power conditioner
Korg DTR-1000 tuner
GK 1001 RB-II (main amp)
GK 700 RB (backup)
2 space drawer

If I get a chance,I'll snap a pic sometime.

Not the biggest or most impressive rack around, but it does the job by itself

I'd love to have a wireless unit and racktuner, aswell as maybe a tech21 RBI, and one of those modded empty front covers with some PC led fans in (for looks and cooling the beast), but i dont see me getting that stuff anytime soon, too much overkill

Anyways, here she is:

Hey, another DeltaLabs fan! I love DL gear, the Effectron II is one of my favorites for absurdly aggressive crunchy glitch delay.

Max, I can tell you what's in the top rack:
DeltaLabs Effectron I (256ms digital delay w/modulation)
DeltaLabs Effectron II (1024ms digital delay w/modulation)
ADA MP1 programmable tube preamp (another killer unit! Les Claypool and Metallica have been known to use them)
DeltaLabs DL4 (early digital delay w/some neat functions)
-and above the Furman-
DeltaLabs Compu Effectron (multi-fx)

You can have a lot of fun with a rack like that!

mmm delay.

have you got any samples of these units in action?

Top Down

Furman AR15-Series2 (powr conditioner.voltage regulaotr)
Korg DTR-2000
Shure ULXP4 (with front mount antenna)
Ampeg SVP-Pro
Dbx 166XL
Dbx 234XL (Crossover)
QSC 3602

And in the back I made myself two custm cooling panels for the same price of the one I found by Middle Atlantic Accessories.

PS. It was this forum that made me decide to go rackmount, it was suposed to be a 4 space rack, then I decided a 6 and finally it turned out to be an 8.
