That's a beautiful blonde bass and those pickups look nice and creamy, but the ramp detracts from how beautiful the pickups are and how they make the bass look. If I were to go with a wood ramp, I would actually have it match the color of the top so that it would be more transparent.

The Ramp actually matches the top very well, but the pictures don't show it the best. It is all yellowheart, the top, headstock, pups, the neck accent, and the control cavity cover, all tied very nicely together. Either way, I love it and it is one of those different strokes for different folks things. Thanks for the comments though and have a great New Year.

I was looking through the threads and came across this about ramps. I've seen them before but never really thought about using one or even why, since I've been playing for 30 years without one and didn't see the need for one.

I assumed they were just on high end, boutique, ERB basses so I just didn't think about it much for myself. But then coming across this thread (and another discussion about ramps) and with my new bass I thought I'd see what it was all about.

Wow! What a difference it makes in my playing! I have always played pretty aggressively and though I've tried to lighten my technique I still would pluck the strings hard and go way past the string. Instead of going across the string I would always go too far and "pull" too much on the string, which ended up slowing me down and causing fatigue over the course of a gig.

The ramp now allows me to even out my plucking and kind of forces me to play the strings the way I've wanted. I am always way too excited when I'm on stage and that excitement always gets me playing far too aggressively. I just can't help myself. But now, not only can I still play hard if I choose to, I'm no longer limiting myself in doing so because the ramp prevents me from going to far and coming up under the string. The best way I can describe using a ramp is like having low action for my right hand. I wish I had done this years ago!!!

I made mine out of some recycled plastic building material they make now, I had lying around (like small sheets of plywood, only black plastic). I sprayed some black spray paint over it and taped it on and it turned out looking (in color and texture) like another pickup.

Thanks for starting this thread! It's made a huge difference in my playing!!!

I'm looking at possibly getting a Citron made for me, and was thinking about what to do with a ramp on it....very nice idea here! I think I'd get one with just the piezo's though, like the Swallow bass. I'm going down to Harvey's shop in April to check them out.

What's the preamp in your bass?

Mine also has an RMC piezo system with a MIDI output. As for the preamp for the magnetic pickups, I believe they were made by Harvey. I bought the bass on eBay (at a steal) so I don't have too much info on it, but after talking with Mr. Citron he told me that he does all of his electronics and makes his own pickups as well.

Thanks. I didn't realize that Harvey made his preamps as well....very cool.
