This is what I am currently using for effects.
1 - First I run into an equalizer
2 - Then I split the signal into 4 parallel signals with a rolls mixer.
3 - I run one of the parallel lines into the Line6 bass pod where I model an acoustic 360 with a rat or big muff distortion pedal. I use this to get a retro growlly distorted sound. Or I also model an Ampeg fliptop with the Rat Distortion pedal. And I also Model an old Marshall amp. With the bass pod I can get a wide range of clean or dirty sounds and various effects and model different amps and speaker cabinets.
4 - The second parallel signal goes into a MXR bass di+. I use this pedal to get a clean modern sound. It also has a distortion button that can give a moderate to extreme amount of modern distortion.
5 - The third parallel signal goes into a Marshall Guv'nor. This gives me an old 60s marshall stack sound. This can go from a small amount of distortion to an over the top marshall sound. This effect can give you a the classic Jack Bruce Cream tone.
6 - The fourth parallel signal goes into a Tech21 VT Bass pedal. With this effect I get a slightly dirty Ampeg SVT bass amp sound with a tube like growl.
7 - Then I remix the 4 signals back together and run it into a bass amp, or pa, or studio mixer. Because the signals are parallel I can mix clean and overdriven sounds together and still get effect and a sound that punches through the mix.

I do like tidy pedalboads. I wish I could show my finished product, but I just finished the rough 3D model on Thursday, and bought the wood yesterday. Here is a picture of the rough model. Forgive the rough edges, I couldn't find my X-acto knife and had to use one of my kid's craft scissors.

I can still get even more tidy with this board, but it’s a start...
Here is mine. That's what it looks like in use. It's a DIY bluetooth footswitch that sends wireless MIDI to a MacBook or iOS device. It's running on an Arduino board and a rechargeable battery that both fit in the case, so it's completely wireless. The first five switches send program changes messages 00 to 04, and the sixth switch sends a CC assigned to the tuner or Mute.

Quite happy with how I managed to tidy up the underside as well. All the patch cables clear the ground too, so the whole thing sits perfectly flat. The step up transformer is neatly tucked under a patch cable and out of the way.
For a while I tried not using the compressor so I could fit a chorus pedal (Tech21 bass boost chorus - awesome but also quite big) I need occasionally. One afternoon I A/B'ed my tone with and without the comp, and had to put the opti-FET back on my board. I like the special sauce it adds to my tone way too much to go without it. When I need the chorus, I just set the pedal beside the board and use an extra patch cable - the setup is not so tidy in these instances but it's what makes the most sense.
As much as I like my small collection of carefully selected pedals, going back to a multi is something I'm considering more and more. Even a small board like mine is heavy enough to be annoying when I use the subway to get to rehearsal (which is pretty much every time).

My pedal board for mic'ing a double bass. Condenser mic > Rolls 48v phantom > Dynasty XLR balanced-to-1/4"-unbalanced converter > Sonic Research ST-300 mini tuner/mute > Noble dual-tube preamp/DI > amp and/or FOH. The Noble provides power for up to six pedals.
I use two, one has the normal stuff (tuner, comp, octave, chorus) and goes to all gigs. The other has weird stuff (synth, looper, etc) and only when useful.

Thanks....yes it's pretty expansive and covered. The only thing I'm still waiting for is a small well featured midi operated Compressor.
The Hog 2 has a load of unique tones that I can't get anywhere else. The H9's and C4 offer a lot of pitch sounds, but the Hog2 has it's own array of sounds. It's particularly good at mellow / cello sounds and the freeze and gliss is amazing. But I do use the expression over midi routed from my Boss ES-5 a lot with dirt to create ambient swells (aka as a volume pedal) and it can be used as a very capable Wah. My C4, Mobius and H9's also feature pretty amazing foot controlled filters, especially the C4...that's in it's own league where filters are concerned.

Ernie Ball makes fabulous volume pedals for active and passive basses.
No, it's home made and heavily influenced by Schmidt. Interestingly....when I built this board it was a unique size and shape and Schmidt didn't have anything like it. Now they do and I can't help think that my board might have influenced their 450.
