Shuttle 6 Failed Me This Weekend

Designing a voltage regulator for a static (especially resistive) load is trivial, it's easy, reliable and quiet. As soon as yo add dynamic and reactive to the load, the problems become quite daunting. It's amazing they work as well as they do. The earlier generations of products had an earned reputation for blowing up in a spectacular way. The learning curve has been quite steep. ;)
 
JKT, what are you using for a voltage regulator, and what kinds of loads are you using it with?

Not sure. It is a unit made by Furman. Single rack space.
What little specs left in my head state that the unit attempts to keep the voltage at 120v when the incoming supply is anywhere between 90 and 140v.

It has 8 outlets in the back, one in the front, LED meter and power switch in the front. It also has all the surge protection and more, found in the much less expensive power "conditioners."

We typically plug in one small solid state guitar amp, my solid state bass rig, and a small powered mixer. We never worked out the load requirements versus what the bench capabilities of this unit. We were only gonna buy one and we only had so much dough to buy it. I can only say life has been better and trouble free since using it.

AR-117? I have one here at the shop and under heavy dynamic loads it will hunt... in fact I blew it up that way by accident during some testing I was doing. Makes a little noise when tap switching also. Your load may not be big enough to cause problems. It's more of an issue when somebody is hooking up a couple of big PA amps and the subs get going... the input voltage will fall and the input current will increase to compensate. It all depends how it will work, but it's important to understand the downfalls of this type of device rather than accepting it as a "blind faith" solution.

That model number sounds familiar. It is definitely of that ilk if not the exact one.

I'm not an engineer but I know everything has it's limitations.
What in your opinion, would constitute a "risky" situation when using this device? Is there a way we could make things worse?

Would 2 of these things be safer?

If you are talking about class D and/or SMPS amps, I don't think so. There are many amps that use this same technology (MB, Walter Woods, AI, etc.) that have virtually no posts or reports on being particularly sensitive to power variations. I've been using class D/SMPS amps for years and years in a wide variety of situations (dive bars, outside generators, entire bands and lights plugged into a single outlet, etc., etc.) and never had a shut-down issue.

What you might be hearing with your 260 is that very 'hard clamp' limiting when you push that amp to its limits (which is unfortunately very easy to do with that unit).
 
I think agedhorse posted the voltage drops/spikes that would be necessary to cause the protection circuitry to come on. I could be wrong though as I can't remember what the numbers are.
 
I, too, had a Shuttle 6.0 die on me mid-way through the third set of it's first gig. I had used it in rehearsal for three hours a couple of days prior. But a little over two hours into the gig, the output ceased and I turned to look at it just in time to see the lights go out. I turned the power switch off, ran a direct line, and powered it back up after the set a half an hour later. It came right back on, but only for about 10 seconds. Then, lights out again. I spoke with Jeff and he was kind enough to get a replacement out to me. (I am very grateful and so impressed with how GB handled things...) But now I'm a little paranoid about using it tomorrow night. Is there something I could have done to prevent the failure? Should I power the unit off in-between sets? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
 
My 6.0 cut out so many times that it was just not reliable!
Too bad as I was really starting to enjoy it. I need an amp to make it through show after show regardless of power fluctuations. Got enough to worry about! Sold & out of my hair. Back to my trusty G&K's:rollno:
 
I've never had an issue with my active basses on any of the heads either.
Oh well, that's why there's more than one company out there, so everybody can be happy.
For me, I'm happy with Genz Benz!!!
