I like the signature Basses, I own several:
Fender Geddy Lee Jazz
Fender Sting P-Bass
Yamaha Attitue Limited (Billy Sheehan)
Ric 4003 Black & white,not a sig,but just like Geddy's old one.
I enjoy playing & owning These Basses very much.
But on the other hand I have my own "custom"
basses that were "Special" ordered to my specifications. Such as:
1990 Modulus Q4, Flame Maple blue/purple burst.
1994 Carvin LB76, Six string, Flame maple saphire blue.with my name on truss rod cover.
1994 LB76F Unlined Fretless six string, all black,
with my name on truss rod cover.
There were and are other sig basses I liked, such as the Steve Harris Iron Maiden Bass, and the
Marcus Miller Jazz Bass, and Ric had the Chris Squire. I recently had a chance to play a "Jaco" Bass, all were very nice. Of course it is all about marketing, and the Big companies competing for our hard earned money, but they are also trying to give us as much choice as possible. I think Fender,Ric & Yamaha has done a great job on these Basses.
And kept most of them affordable. I did think it was wrong to have Flatwounds on the Jaco. I think
Fender screwed the pooch, they know that he was a Rotosound player,
They could have at least put there own Roundwound on it. Or at least Included a set in the case for the price they were asking, I think that one was overpriced. The original Jaco RE-issue I saw at the old Bass Centre in L.A. in 1991 came with Rotosounds on it. I wonder what they put on the Relic ?

I have a Geddy Lee JB and I don't especially like Rush...(Don't Hit me!!! please).
I've only bought this bass because it had all the specs I wanted for a JB, it's good looking, and it has a very good sound for the money.
It could have been a non-signature bass I would have bought it anyway.
Moreover it's not a you-see-the-bass-you-know-the-man bass(in fact yes! but I don't even know geddy lee's face). I mean it's not like Kiss's bass, or some really weird signature bass. I don't care there the name of the man behind the head. If it's a good bass, take it.

Is the Fodera Emperor, Napoleon's signature bass??

I own a Jaco fretless bass, and it is a SWEEEEEET fretless bass, it even looks cool, although the reverse tuning screws me up time to time (must everything be that realistic?) but it is a SWEET bass, and I couldn't really get that kinda quality without going to the custom shop, the Miller is also a SWEET bass, I was thinking about that before I saw the KSD Proto-J, where else are you going to get a SWEET bass with inlays and active/passive options like that for that kinda price? The name really doesn't do it for me if the bass sounds like crap, but if the bass is awesome and its a name I like on it its a bonus, if its a name I don't really care for, oh well as long as the bass sounds sweet.

I own a Cort/Elrick Josh Paul 5-string bass. Now, I don't know just who the heck Josh Paul is, but I bought this bass largely on the glowing review Bass Player gave it a couple of months ago, and my need for a back-up for my MTD 535. To make a long story short, the MTD is collecting dust and I can't put the JP5 down. I paid $3200 new for the MTD and $650 new for the JP5....go figure! Fact is, I'd buy it again no matter who's name was on it (well, just as long as they didn't put that name as an inlay on the 12th fret!) :D

I don't have any problem with signature models, as long as they are nice basses and something that I am looking for I would get one. The only time I have a problem with one, is when they have large noticable markings, that let you know it is a sig. Most noticeable is the Fieldy bass, or even the Sting bass, I just don't like either of the inlays, and even if it sounded great, I wouldn't be able to buy it. I would love a Victor Bailey Jazz though, the one I played was awesome.

I recently aquired a Marcus Miller Jazz, like many others here - because of the bass and it's features... nearly all of which I would have chosen on my "dream bass." While I'm very familiar with the guy and his "tone," due to clips I've heard... I can't name a single song he's done.... (although I do plan on changing that, again... due to the sound clips.)

Now something I wanted for a long time: an Ibanez K7 for the U-bar tremolo, just about any 7 string JEM would do nicely for me. Hard to find a nice 7 string guitar, but these do it very nicely.

There are a few more really nice signature instruments, I'd buy any ESP Metallica Signature series based on the person who inspired it knowing that the necks all feel the same, which is very nice and they're loaded with EMGs.

Now as far as Signature basses, my Stingrays are fine for now.

What about basses endorsed but not signature, would that be put off for you too???

A signature on a bass doesn't matter to me, because if I don't like playing it is useless to me. So if a signature bass plays and sounds good to me, and the price isn't riduculous I will buy it.

Ones I want to try and maybe buy.

Fender Marcus Miller 4 & 5. Definately want to try first because the fretboard is radiused different from what I'm used to.

Lakland Bob Glaub. Price is only thing stopping me at this point.

Fender Jaco fretless.

Yamaha John Patitucci model

My weapon of mass distortion is a signature model...however, not a players signature. It is a G&L L-2000 Signature Series with Leo Fender's signature on the body. Does this count ?? I love this bass so much that you can see my thumb has worn through the finish down to the bare wood. Boom boom daddy !! And for the sake of those who will gasp at the apparent decal, it is a fridge label, that sticks to glass. You can peel it right off and stick it back on. Cool way to decorate your bass without the deface....

I like Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, and Geddy Lee more than about any other bassists. I would not buy their signature basses just because it had their name on it. It all depends on the bass (sound, feel, looks, etc.). I am going to get a Joe Osborn 5 string, but don't care about his name on it. Honestly, I never heard of him before looking into Lakland basses.
