During our occasional "spontaneous jam", I like throwing in recognizable basslines that fit into what we're doing. "We Got the Beat" was one of my personal triumphs.

"I don't know what y'all were playing, but I was covering the Go Gos."

As a beginner not too long ago and huge fan of easy to play songs; I can personally vouch for a bunch of these songs.

Stand By Me
Sunshine of Your Love
Some Kind of Wonderful (this one is also good if someone is trying to learn how to play and sing)
In the Midnight Hour
Brown Eyed Girl
I'll Take You There

I'm planning on adding a few more of these to the repetoire especially if I get the band to go along.

You may want to try them on "Signed Sealed Delivered" after they have gained some mastery. Great bassline that makes the song but a little tricky for me.

Tush by ZZ Top is another good easy one - maybe not quite as distinctive or essential a bassline as some of the other songs mentioned but it does reinforce the blues progression and it has a nice little walkdown part. The kids will love to play it, if you think the parents would be OK with it. :D

Even though a lot of these songs are older, I think your better students will have the same reaction I had - "Look at me, I am playing a bassline and other people can recognize the song." :hyper:

Depending on how old the parents are - they will get a big kick out of listening to their son or daughter playing a tune from when they were kids themselves.
