Single Cut basses, Just a fad?

I believe these basses are destined for extinction. It seems like they were a big hit because a few great players were seen playing them.

Is there something I am missing? Do they offer anything that a Double-Cut bass does not?

I believe a nice long upper horn and light weight is the future of electric basses.

Theres supposed to be a fatter bottom end and sustain, but I havent played one yet. I just don't like the look of them...at all.

I’m sure Strat players said the same thing about les Paul guitars a half century ago.

Personally I think a lot of single cuts are ugly. But that’s a totally subjective thing. There are people who love them and I do like the look of some of them. Those Cort fan fret basses for example. I’ve considered getting one as an affordable backup for my dingwall.

I also happen to like the look Clement basses single cut shapes and think Janek Gwizdalas single cut Foderas are some of the nicest looking basses I’ve seen

My main bass is a singlecut since 2011.
The kind of stability and comfort you get with a singlecut is unique,
since all the section of the neck that is connected to the upper body
part never gets relief. Its just perfectly straight always.
So you can set the relief you want, that occurs only in the first 12 frets,
mantaining low and equal action across all the neck.

I just thought it would be a great topic for discussion on this cloudy Friday.

I've only played one for a few minutes at a shop. It seemed a little different but not enough to warrant buying one. I am not usually very picky when it comes to looks in a bass but in general these do not appeal to me.
YMMV of course!

Sadowsky, Fodera, Elrick, Brubaker, etc. build them and sell them in spite of the fact that people don't like playing them!

Fodera and Kenneth Lawrence were doing modern singlecut designs since the early nineties at least. Not a fad, and here to stay. Just like headless basses and fanned frets, they garnered a lot of attention when they first came out, but are now another design choice for those that see the need.

All electric basses are fads. Some have lasted longer than others. All will go the way of the dinosaurs.

Yes.

They already made it. Cort Curbow. Horn to the 12th fret, weigh about 7 pounds. Sound great. They sold dozens. Utter commercial disaster.

I've played quite a few and love them (Warwick, Fodera, Skjold)... Of course, none are cheap unless you're buying an Ibanez or Cort.

I'd love to own a Skjold, they're amazing instruments!
