Single Cut basses, Just a fad?

I have two single cut Basses and never gave the matter any thought until now. I guess it makes more of a difference with a hollow, semi-hollow, or chambered body.

I believe these basses are destined for extinction. It seems like they were a big hit because a few great players were seen playing them.

Is there something I am missing? Do they offer anything that a Double-Cut bass does not?

I believe a nice long upper horn and light weight is the future of electric basses.

They are not a new idea. My first bass was a single cut. . . in 1965. A Framus Star bass. There were a lot of SC basses around back then and they haven't gone away.

If it is designed correctly an SC will be just as good a bass as any DC. They are as relevant as any other shape of bass on the market.

So, these are my two main players. Are they single cuts or other? Seriously, I don't know what category they fall into. I've just been on an Epiphone kick for the last few years. I love their stuff.

I've only owned one singe cut and I didn't really take to it, but while very playable being a Wishbass it wasn't exactly the smallest instrument and I have never got on with big basses. Although I mostly play with my thumb behind the neck I found that long upper bout got in the way a little.

I love my Kiesel Zeus single cut, hands down the most comfortable and best sounding bass I've ever played.

Now that’s a nice looking bass.
I really like the blue set against the light wood tone.
It has a modern look while retaining a somewhat traditional single cut profile.

It’s those things that have the upper body going half way up the neck that I don’t like.

Thanks! I agree, this is a more subtle teleish style cut which is what I like best.

That's the thing though, there's a whole lot of single cut basses (and have been for decades) that don't have the extended upper bout whale look...

In terms of internet searches in a period covering 15 years out of the 70+ years of the electric bass. There's a whole world outside of the internet, we're not part of the matrix yet...

In case no-one's yet said it, the first electric bass guitar (the one Paul Tutmarc invented) was single cut

That's the thing though, there's a whole lot of single cut basses (and have been for decades) that don't have the extended upper bout whale look...

From some feedback I've received people question the fact that the strap button on the cut is at the 15th fret instead of the 12th. They assume it's out of balance or too awkward thinking you have to reach further out with your left arm to play. It's actually better, it sits more towards my right hip making reach with the left arm even easier.

The basses with the really long cut I believe is more for their balance to where the strap goes. I think it also affects reach to the higher frets. Mine has full acess.
