Single Malt Scotch!

I just bought a bottle of Glenfiddich 18 for a good friend's birthday. I'm seriously considering keeping it and getting him something else.

Bunch of teenagers outside the store tried to get me to buy them booze, at a liquor store directly across the street from a police precinct. It was an interesting little conversation. They didn't seem to understand that me doing that could very well ruin my life. I haven't looked into the laws but I'm pretty sure it's contributing to the delinquency of a minor, or something. All I know is you don't wanna be charged with anything that includes the word "minor."

Finally opened the Laphroaig Cask Strength with a friend and it's most excellent as @Joshua said it would be.

I was surprised that the peat/phenolic notes weren't overpowering on the nose or palate. They are prominent on the nose (and are detectable across the room by my wife...) but came later on in the palate, as part of the long finish which I appreciated. It started with notes of spearmint, which was interesting (almost the opposite of Lagavulin 16), and then there was dark chocolate, honey, molasses with later vanilla and oak (not overpowering at all, but quite nice). I'm surprised how tasty (let alone drinkable) it is at full strength, but it's fantastic with a bit of water too. Nice nice nice.

I was gifted a bottle of Balvenie 12 Doublewood, which I'm interested in revisiting sometime, because I used to find it too sweet but I think my tastes have changed a lot in the last ten or so years. I also recently bought a Port Charlotte 10 and a Lagavulin 16, but I won't be opening up any of those three in a while. I do want to buy another bottle of Ardbeg Corrywreckan sometime, so I can do a clash of the Islay titans at some point before the Lap CS is gone...but I'm going to nurse this bottle into next year at least.

Maybe I'm the only person that drinks this stuff in the summer. :D

I came across a single cask 13 year old Benromach cask strength single malt at my Costco. Try saying that five times fast. I bought the last two bottles, and only 182 were made from the cask.

It's delicious. At 57.1%, it's about the same strength as Laphroaig cask strength. It's a bit less peaty but has a similar level of sweetness. Benromach is one of my favorites…I can't imagine anyone that likes single malts not enjoying this dram. A bit of smoke, cedar, mango, hay, toffee pudding, citrus, vanilla. Fine on its own or with a bit of water.

Well, if you're into smoke as many are here, you'll understand; here's a great not-Scotch score I just made! But it's kinda related. Usually only available in Alaska and the PNW, one of our local Ohio purveyors of rare brews got in a case, and notified me that this one was in. I took six of them home, they had to save half of them for other folks to try! Four are in the basement to age, one in the fridge to enjoy with friends soon.

Out of quite a few thousands of beers tasted/judged/created in the last four decades, it's solidly my #2 of all time. It will definitely awake your Scotch-enamored taste buds, albeit with alder wood instead of peat; the stuff of smoked salmon. I highly suggest that if you ever get a chance, give it a try!

And yes, it ages very well. As in still potentially wonderful at 8-10 years, acceptable at up to maybe 12 or so.

Picked up this bottle the other day. It is quite good, and an interesting mix of "light," "smooth," and "complex." Definitely tastes like a Glenfiddich, but a little less bite than usual, and more complex/interesting.
