Single Malt Scotch!

A recent B day present - Mmmmmm....Pretty tasty, I like it with some soda water on the side.

And a newly open Bar less than a mile from my home, 150 kinds of Scotch, I'm in Heaven!

Both the Macallan (which I have not personally tasted, so by reputation) and the Balvenie (which I have tasted) are fine whiskys. I fact, have a bottle of that Balvenie on the rack (odd, to have a collection of unopened bottles of scotch - I blame my brother-in-law). I also have a Macallan (co-branded with Kirkland - Costco of all things) on the rack. Either might be the next non-peaty to be uncorked.

Happy Birthday! That truly is a great bottle you have their. Worth well more than the asking price, IME/IMHO. :cool:

I just scored another bottle of the Lagavulin 12 year Cask Strength. Man, is that stuff good! :D

if i knew where to buy it i would. just wanna try it. its definitely not going to taste good by scotch standards, but might be interesting.

my to try list- the "big names" in the peaty world. ardbeg, lagavulin, bowmore, caol ila, laphroaig... too bad i can't afford to try them all and will probably go with whatevers the cheapest in a 12-15 year bottle.

i'm also really itching to try the johnny walker double black. i like the regular black label, especially for the price.. double black is $10 or so more and i've heard its quite good.

Yeah, I'd worry all the artificial flavors would leave me with a non-alcoholic whisky hangover.

Of the listed peaty ones there I think that Bowmore 12 stands up pretty well and doesnt cost an arm and a leg. Also I prefer the Laphroaig 10 to the quarter cask in the same price range, but I know more than one person on here say I'm wrong about that.

what about this "black bottle" blended stuff i've heard about? ever tried it?

I've got Ardbeg and Tamdhu at the moment, and will probably pick up another bottle of Highland Park, Caol Ila and/or Lagavullin soon...and I'm close to you on Long Island. We can meet up sometime (assuming you're legal). I've wanted an excuse to host a tasting anyway...I'll see if MAJOR METAL can make an appearance too.

Here is a tip I hope you will take advantage of and enjoy. Try McClelland Islay scotch.

It is actually a young (aged only 5 years) batch of Bowmore Scotch. It's a little raw (kind of an alcoholish twang) but the underlying peaty flavor is right up there with the Bowmore 12. Here's the clincher: 22-26 bucks a bottle! Give it a try.

I have a ground rule with Scotch that I follow (and yes it is prejudicial and sorry to anyone it offends)....if it has "Glen" in the name, keep movin'. A couple of exceptions are Glenmorangie and Glenronach.

If you are new to Scotch and want one that is a little easier on the beginning palate, I recommend Dalwhinnie....not cheap though.

I don't think many of the brands mentioned are even available in my state. Of the inexpensive single-malts (<$60) there's only Glennfiddich, Glenlevit, and Macallen. Everything else is $80+, and I never really bothered to find out what brands they were.

Yes! For the money I like the islay and lowland mcclelland. not a fan of their highland or speyside though.
auchentoshan 10 is not bad and in the ' fidich 12 range. Easy on the palate if youre just startig with scotch drinking.

not offended but theres some decent glens out there. glenfarclas can be good, glengarioch isnt bad either. both can be sweet but can be good now and then. im sure theres more that i cant think of right now.

The selection over here is not good that's what makes it tricky. I have this same problem with just about everything, musical instruments, photography stuff, scotch...

I'm going to Quebec city soon I will note the names down and try to get a bottle or two.

Atm, me and a friend of mine are enjoying an Oban 14yo, which I find pretty good... but that's a 80$ bottle so I kind of owe him some nice scotch haha.
