Single Malt Scotch!

I'm relatively new to the world of Scotch, but very much enjoying it. I got a bottle of Laphroaig 10 for Christmas last year and that got me interested. So far all of my bottles have been gifts from clients who know what I like! Here is my collection. Looking to add a Lagavulin 16 and Macallan 12 soon.

If you haven't tried the Macallan yet you may want to hold off. I see we have a couple of the same preferences with the Ardbeg 10, Laphroaig 10 and Lagavulin 16, but I'm one who has yet to find a Macallan or Glenmorangie that I like, regardless of their popularity.

A few you may be interested in taking a look at that I've really liked are the anCnoc 12, Longmorn 12, Caol Ila 12, Old Pultney 17, Bunnahabhain 12 and Bruichladdich Laddie.

Since you like the Laphroaig 10, I think you'd also like the Laphroaig Quarter Cask, one of my friends overall favorites, and the very popular (for very good reasons) Ardbeg Uigeadail and even better yet, Ardbeg Corryvreckan.

Thanks for the advice. I will wait to try the macallan before I splurge on a bottle. Lagavulin 16 is gonna have to happen real soon based on the reviews in this thread!

I came really close on the Laphroaig qc so that will probably be what replaces my 10 when that is gone.

I'm a pretty big Macallan fan, but I know not everybody here is. The fun thing about scotch is there's plenty of variety to try out. :)

I'm a big Lagavulin 12 and 16 fan, but the most recent bottle I bought of the 16, while still good, lacked some of the magic that I've come to expect from it, and while I'll still buy it in the future, it would be nice to know what numbers might be on the bottles so we can identify which batches are better than others.

I've not tried the Lagavulin 12 but the 16 is pretty much my favourite.

Big decision, what malt to leave out for Santa tomorrow night? I'm thinking one of the Highland Park miniatures I picked up from the distillery, maybe the 18. Only the best for Santa.
If Lagavulin 16 is your favorite I think your a shoe-in for the 12 as well. I had them both in the same night at a scotch tasting this last spring and was already a fan of the 16, but the 12 is incredible too.

Had some Highland Park Loki a couple weeks ago and am hoping to try it again soon!

one of the best parts of scotch is coming to appreciate the subtleties of a really good one more and more. lagavulin is one of those- make sure you've had a few peaty scotches- i mean, gone through a whole bottle over a long period of time, before you try that one - you'll appreciate it SO much more! (that is not to say it wont always be delicious.)

that laphroaig 10 is a really classic too - had a glass last night myself. finish that, try a cheaper peaty one - like the mcllelands islay if you can- then try the lagavulin, it'll blow you're mind.

And when you try it, let it sit in your mouth for a few seconds before swallowing. Part of the fun is observing the different layers of flavour emerge over time. Lagavulin is especially good at this.

I'd only suggest the Mclellands if one can't afford anything better. Having gone through a bottle of it myself, I enjoyed it, but would have preferred something better for the amount of time it took me to finish it, and the Lagavulin is definitely something that can be appreciated immediately, as I did.

The only issue is value/cost....you would always have lagavulin but at 4x the cost of mclellands, sometimes you gotta rein it in.

Its an early bottling of bowmore but in some ways I like it better.

L16 is the gold standard comfort scotch for me. Ahhhhhhh!

Lagavulin has an almost oily texture which makes for a great "mouth feel," I think the experts call it. The only other whisky I've tried that has that kind of thing going on was the Talisker 18 I tried a couple of weeks ago. Very nice, I might add.

Like I've said before in this thread, if I had to choose only one whisky to drink for the rest of my life, it would be Lagavulin 16.
Even people who aren't fond of Islay malts like Lagavulin.

You're right, and I didn't mean to make it sound like a direct comparison.

However for a little less the twice the cost of the Mclelland's I can get Ardbeg 10, which is my overall favorite, even over it's more expensive housemate, Corryvreckan, or Lagavulin 16.

It's the one that I want anytime, everytime and while I like the others better when I'm in the mood, none of them does it for me like Ardbeg 10.

Anyone tried the Bowmore Tempest? I had some a couple weeks ago and really liked it! I also tried a Talisker that I finally liked the other day and it was the 18!
