Single Malt Scotch!

I went to buy a bottle of Lagavulin and not only were they out of stock but it was listed at $87/bottle. Is this the going rate or is my state just very expensive when it comes to liquor? I thought I remembered seeing it cheaper elsewhere. Hmm...

After discovering the 16 by chance and totally falling in love with it, I have not been able to get another bottle. From what I understand, their entire production is sold out. It sells for around $68 at my local grocery store (which has a simply amazing selection of scotch).

The manager of the liquor dept. told me it was in 'indefinite' back-order. Just for the heck of it, I looked it up on a few on-line sites, and they all said 'not currently available'. Rats!

That may be the case for US orders, but it isn't universal. No issue with stock here as far as I can see.

The price has been going up steadily, it's a good malt and has had a fair rise in popularity. Good excuse to check out some other malts :)

K&L currently has it Invalid Link Removed at $65.99

Thanks it's going on the list! I have a bottle of the ardberg 10 and I'm a huge fan.
Three Ardbeg's for you to try if you get the chance are Uigeadail, Corryvreckan and the newest, Ardbog.

For any Ardbeg 10 fan, these three are a must to try, although I quit buying the Uigeadail after falling for the Corryvreckan and the Ardbog is really something not to miss.

Keep looking, but also try some of the other Islay brands, especially Ardbeg, Caol Ila 12, Bowmore (Legend, 12, Tempest), Bruichladdich Laddie 10 and Bunnahabhain 12.

If you can afford to spend a little more than the Lagavulin 16, I'm positive you'll fall for the slightly more expensive, and worth it, Lagavulin 12.

The only ones of these suggestions that goes over $100 is the Lagavulin 12 and Ardbeg Ardbog listed above.

While great Islay whiskies, keep in mind that standard Bruichladdich is unseated and Bunnahabhain is very light on the peat, so they won't be as hard hitting as an Ardbeg or Laphroaig.

Bruichladdich seem to have stopped producing the Laddie 10 (though it is still readily available), they are going going with the "Scottish Barley - The Classic Laddie". It looks like they are going for non-age stated standard lines.

One worth checking out is their Port Charlotte "Heavily Peated" whisky. There's a hit of peat on the nose, but it's not overpowering. The taste is quite floral and fruity with a bit of a lingering background peat. Apparently it's to do with them using quite long stills, you just don't get that much peat in the final product. Definitely an interesting one to try.

Quite fancy trying Octomore, but have heard that while it's good, it isn't good enough for the accompanying price tag.

Some nice peaked whisky showing up outside of Islay too, Ben Romach and Ben Riach both do some interesting peaty varieties.

I'm a bit surprised K, I've been extolling the virtues of Lagivullen 16 for years to you. For me, it was always the Scotch I measured all others by. It's available here, sadly it's close to $100. I would suggest you look for Laphoig 18 as an alternative. Two other great scotches in that taste family are the Talisker 10, and Carol Illa 12. I shared a glass of Talisker distillers edition (bottled in 08) with you and you loved it as I remember. But they tend to be pricier than Lag 16. For me right now I can barely afford Bowmore Legend (still the best budget glass).

Nice, a whole thread devoted to this? I just bought a Caol Ila and Laphroaig Quarter Cask to enjoy at home. Was weird having every old guy in the store come up and judge me by what was in my shopping cart. That said they had only good things to say about my choices.

Yeah, they won't ship to MI. Which is weird. It's legal to ship spirits to MI, but not wine. I'm going to call them, and double check that's a great price. I get Laphroig 18 in IN for $62, and that is a very good Scotch, certainly in the same class with Lag 16.

Hey Steve,

Yeah, the law varies by state. I never really considered most of these scotch varieties since they were so expensive when I was in Michigan. The prices are much closer to the on-line prices in WI.

Hope you are well. One heck of a Winter this year!

Just picked up two amazing bottles last week; Talisker 18 and Balvenie Single Barrel 15.

There is talk that the Single Barrel 15 will be going out of production and as many scotches as I've tried, I've never had one like this. Very worthwhile seeking out and I'll be keeping some on hand for as long as it's available, right next to its other Balvenie kin, the DoubleWood 12 and Golden Cask 14.

I am a very happy Valentine!
