Caol Ila (12) is my go-to. It doesn't have as big a peat hit as Laphroaig or that deep woodenness of Lagavulin, but it's just damned nice. Pretty well balanced and smokey but not massively peaty. Very good in the winter, though it works well in the summer too (liquid BBQ).
Blended doesn't have to mean bad, or cheaper for that matter
(heck, that RB Blended costs more than some entry level malts here)
The Highland Park 15 was a disappointment to me. I found it a very narrow flavor. I mean it was nice to drink, but for whatever reason fell short of my expectation. For scotch that's light and easy going, I guess I'd prefer Dalwhinnie.
I'm interested in hearing fans of Lagavulin and Laphroig share their experiences with Caol Ila, Laddie 10 and anything starting with "Glen" that they like.
